Current customer rating:
1985 Mercedes-Benz 380 SL Coupe/Roadster - California car for almost all its life.
The 380 SL (R 107 in Mercedes-speak) took the chassis components of the mid-size
Mercedes-Benz W 114
model and installed the larger engines from the top-of-the-line
S-Class (W 116) . which produced excellent performance. The SL model was a 2-seat convertible/roadster with standard soft top and removable hardtop .
Starting in 1980. US 380 SL cars were equipped with lambda control. which varied the air/fuel mixture based on feedback from an oxygen sensor and the earlier 3-speed
automatic
was replaced by a four-speed unit.
At this time. the
V 8 engines
were re-tuned for greater efficiency and consumed less fuel. Also in 1985. the Bosch KE Jetronic was fitted. employing a more modern engine management "computer". which controlled idle speed. fuel rate. and air/fuel mixture.
The R 107 for the North American market sported quad headlights. and front and rear bumpers with 8 inches of rubber on each end.
The 380 SL most closely resembles the original concept of the R 107 introduced in 1972 in terms of engine size and weight. but benefits from the several significant improvements engineered along the way: KE Jetronic fuel injection. 4-speed transmission. climate control system. higher axle ratios. etc. Thus. the later years are considered to be very desirable examples of the 380 SL breed. with the 1985 being the most sought after.
This particular example lived almost its entire life garaged in California. away from salt and snow. which explains its entirely rest-free. original sheet metal condition. (This is documented by a Car Fax report. ) It is finished in a rarely seen. but highly attractive Silver Blue Metallic. with Grey leather interior. The soft-top (brand new) is the deluxe Hartz Cloth as furnished by the factory. and there is a removable matching hardtop that comes with the car. The only non-stock aspect of the car is an upgraded radio which plays AM/FM and CDs. but the original Becker is available for collector originality. The interior has no cracks on the dash. nor any visible wear on the leather seats or door panels.
In short. this is an excellent example of a Mercedes model that has begun to appreciate (as recently written up this month by Hemmings Motor News). as the newer SLs (post 1989) have been relegated to used cars. and the previous SLs are reaching or exceeding six figures in value.
