Two owners from new.  No rust.  Never restored.  "Opalgrun Metalic" ("Opal Green Metallic") over blue cloth interior.  Recent major services and always well maintained.  Running and driving perfectly with no issues.  An honest. carefully owned. and unsullied example of a rare and inspiring motorcar.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?With two owners from new. both members of the BMW club of Spain. this e21 spent the majority of its life in the very dry Aragon region before moving later to Navarra.  Bodywork and chassis are straight and rust free. with no signs of damage and also no signs of substantial restoration. reflective of a life of realistic mileage and careful maintenance.  "Opalgrun Metalic" paint shines beautifully and panels are straight. with proper and even door gaps.  Both doors. hood and trunk lid all shut with the characteristic BMW solidity.  Chrome is excellent and the original wheels are straight and free from curb rash.
Inside. the original blue cloth upholstery is holding up very well. with light wear commensurate with the age and mileage. but no rips or tears anywhere in the fabric.  Seat foams and suspension are firm. and all seat adjustments function as they should.  The dashboard has no cracks. and all vinyl. where used. is entirely undamaged.
The undercarriage is clean and straight and rust free throughout. and the engine bay is tidy. with no leaks or stains from past seepage.
In all ways. it is a very tidy and well kept motorcar. looking and feeling in every way like an original 323i that has been driven regularly and maintained faithfully.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO DRIVE?If the "Neue Klasse" was the BMW that opened the world's eyes to just how fun a compact BMW can be. it was the e21 which truly cemented BMW's place in the hearts and minds of enthusiasts everywhere.  Bolstered by their "Ultimate Driving Machine" ad campaign of the 1980's. the e21 was the workhorse of the BMW line. combining balanced handling characteristically brilliant steering. and elegant styling. and of all the widely available e21 variants. it is the 323i that is now the most sought after.
Already famous for straight six engines of incomparable smoothness and soulful sound. BMW packaged their 2. 3L version of the engine in the e21 chassis. mated it to a slick shifting 5-speed manual gearbox. and dubbed it the 323i.  Clean examples are harder and harder to find. with most of the survivors seemingly modified or otherwise sullied. and it's quite difficult these days to find a proper. two-owner. all-stock example.  Even in Europe.
Twist the key and the engine fires immediately. without touching the pedal. and the first thing you notice is a smooth. relaxed idle with a mature yet menacing exhaust note.  Blip the throttle and you can sense the engine's willingness to rev. and the sound is lovely with the dual exhaust system.  BMW has always been good at ergonomic design. and in the 323i everything falls perfectly to hand.  Adjusting the seat to find a comfortable position is child's play. the shift lever is right where you want it to be. and visibility is outstanding in all directions.
Underway. the clutch is strong and takes up at a normal height. and the gear change is slick and positive. with short. crisp throws.  The steering. long my favorite part of the BMW driving experience. is the best in the world.  That's not hyperbole. it's true.  Perfectly weighted. with the best feedback anywhere. you always know precisely what the front tires are doing.
And the engine?  Particularly in this chassis. it's a fantastic piece of kit.
The smoothness is deceptive.  Throttle response is quick. and the flexibility is astounding. allowing you to pull cleanly virtually from idle speed. and with real muscle from almost any RPM.  It feels lively as hell off the line. and with a bit more throttle the engine starts flexing its muscles very. very early in the rev range.  So much so that by 3000RPM the car is pulling with serious aggression.  It's amazing how light this car is when compared to something like a modern 3-series. or even an e36. and the result is pretty startling.  Powering out of corners it's easy to break the rear tires loose. and if you keep your foot in it the car just hooks up and catapults itself forward. with that sweet BMW six-cylinder sound filling the cabin.  It's a real joy to drive and make no mistake. this is a legitimately quick motorcar even in a modern context.  Overtaking is easy on secondary roads. and the acceleration doesn't come from short gearing. because in 5th gear at 120kph the tach is reading comfortably under 3000RPM.  In three days of driving I don't think I ever exceeded 5000RPM. partly because I tend to drive more gently these days. but mostly because I never needed to.  The midrange torque and response of this engine make it one of my all-time favorites.
Everything works in the car. including the digital dashboard clock.  Every light. every switch. every electrical tidbit.  The climate control (sans A/C in typical European fashion) works as intended and this car has faithfully passed its annual safety inspection without fail for nearly a generation.
In short. it drives like it looks.  Exactly as you would expect BMW's small muscle car from the 1980's to drive. if carefully maintained and enthusiast owned throughout its life.  It's a blast. and the kind of classic that doesn't force you to compromise.  Drive it every day.  Take your kids to school in it.  Lark out across country in it.  The 323i doesn't care.  It will do it all with style and speed.
