This no reserve auction is for an ultra rare 1934 Hupmobile 417-W 3 Window coupe.

In 1934 a company called Murray Body Corp.  was building car bodies for both Hupmobile and Ford.  After the Great Depression Murray was having major financial trouble.  In an attempt to keep the company afloat Ford allowed Murrays designer Amos Northup to combine and modify their 3 window coupe and cabriolet tooling for the Hupmobile production run. They ended up using the Ford Cabriolets body and frameless doors. 3 window coupe top with modifications. along with the 3 window front and rear glass. and upper hood sections. With the modified Ford base Hupmobile added their own unique and stylish features that were each superior to its Ford counterpart.  The additions included the arched fenders. floating running boards. hood sides with horizon lines. a long sweeping grill etc.  This was all set in place on Hupmobiles 117 inch wheelbase frame that was also built to greater specs than Ford. Unfortunately only about 6 of these rare cars are known to exist making them perhaps the rarest of any 3 window coupe ever built.

This particular car has been off the road and in dry storage since the mid 1950's and is "as found" dust and all. Obviously it will need full restoration but considering it is 83 years old it is in remarkable condition.  Years ago a coat of red primer was placed on the car.  It is thin and has some light surface rust showing but the car shows no signs of any filler. patching. collision repair etc.  The fenders. running boards roof. doors. deck-lid. frame etc. are all extreamly solid which only confirms the lengthy dry storage. You will see in some photos the primer flaking over the original black paint. this is not through rust. The only rust that is through is strictly limited to the floorboard. rockers and one dime size hole around a fender brace. All the sheetmetal to replace these parts including a 3 part floor and rockers are with the car.
This car is surprisingly complete with all of the drivetrain and body components intact. The engine is stuck from setting. I used a bore scope to check the cylinders.  From what I could see they looked good. The previous owners family stated that the car was running good when parked. The interior is missing the front seat but we have been told by a hupp expert that this is also a part that is shared with the Ford Cabriolet. The rumble seat frame is with the car but the wood will need replacing. I have the original door panels but they are in poor condition. The gauges are all complete and showing only 9517 miles which could be original given its many years of storage.

Some of the extra parts are NOS engine gaskets. new windshield trim. what looks to be a NOS wiring harness and many other parts both new and used. We do not have the front and rear glass but it is the same as the 34 Ford 3 window coupe.
If you have any questions or would like to make an appointment to view the car I can be reached at 828-593-8876. Due to the rarity of this car I will not end the auction early. I will be starting the auction at $1 with no reserve and will let the market determine its value.
