The 1964 Austin-Healey BJ 8 Mk III presented here is very special Sports Convertible. Finished in deep Mediterranean Blue with a light gray leather interior. 60 spoke stainless and chrome wire wheels and radial tires. it looks just like any other very well-restored BJ 8. However. this three owner. 62. 00 original mile. Austin-Healey is truly a unique offering.
The BJ 8 belonged to its second owner. an aeronautical engineer. from 1968 to 2005. In the latter part of his ownership he performed an unparalleled nut and bolt. frame off restoration. which included an assortment of technical upgrades and modifications. Not satisfied by merely restoring the car to exceptional mechanical and cosmetic condition. in the spirit of the famous racing Healey's. he crafted a BJ 8 Mk III that performs as one would expect from a 21 st century version of the this wonderful automobile.
This was achieved by substantially improving the Austin-Healey's performance. The original inline six-cylinder engine was completely rebuilt. balanced. ported and polished. Triple Weber carburetors were fitted to a John Chatham intake manifold. and to accommodate the freer breathing powerplant. a stainless steel exhaust system was installed. The electrical systems were all updated. which included a new harness and electronically controlled ignition. Stainless steel brake lines. four-wheel disc brakes. rack and pinion steering. and Koni shocks greatly contribute to the improved driving characteristics of the car.
The body and chassis were stripped to bare metal. zinc plated. primed and sealed. then painted with Glasurit paint to provide ultimate protection from corrosion. Appropriately. all the bright work was either re-plated or replaced.
Although never raced. the Austin-Healey produces an estimated 175 brake horsepower. and would most certainly perform admirably in competition. Included in the sale are factory manuals. books. drawings and data sheets of the restoration and modifications. as well as a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate attesting to the BJ 8 Mk III's provenance.
The list of modifications to this Austin-Healey is too long to list. so we strongly encourage close examination of the vehicle onsite. It was expertly crafted with intelligent and practical improvements over the original design. sinuously integrated throughout the automobile. Among these changes are improved engine cooling. enhanced ventilation and special door hinges to name just a few. This Sports Convertible is for the enthusiast who wants a period Austin-Healey that behaves as a modern Austin-Healey would.
The carpets are a little discolored from age but present still very well.
