This is "Black Smoke". A the car that will get you the all the fun you want and plenty of attention. The car was built by the owner as a follow up to has last Tri-Five with the exception that this one didn't have any rules to follow or adhere to any style constraints. You're looking at turn key fun. it was mostly completed 11 years ago but health issues put it on the back burner. this year it was brought out to be finished so it could be sold to someone that will be able to be out at shows and such to enjoy it. The car was originally a local car to Fresno. it was born with a 6 cyl. and "3 on the tree". He has always built up these Tri-Five cars. from original to 60's style hot rods and knew this car for many years before he was able to talk the owner into letting it be the canvass to create what you see here. In fact the guy that had it before him lives right down the street from me.
The body had the dings and dent one would expect from a car that was used for high school kids to drive to school and as a grocery hauler but it didn't have any rust
anywhere on the body nor had it ever been in an accident when he started.
First off the car was separated from the frame in order to detail the frame
while prepping the body so this was a frame-off restoration. The car had all the side trim stripped and holes welded shut and then spent many hours in the body shop getting everything straight before putting a skim coat for final prep. The hood louvers were done by an old school artist. each one was done by hand and were so nice that a very little amount of filler was needed to prep them. All the gaps were massaged to make everything look even. He never liked the fact that most of these chip the paint when the trunk closes so he fitted this one with a Cadillac trunk closer so it never has to be slammed. The spare tire drop well was sealed so it has a cleaner look under the car. The bumpers are one-of-a-kind. they are the 3 piece bumpers but looked too plain so he cut pieces of exhaust pipe and welded them in so it was one solid bumper and gave it a ribbed look so you won't see another set like these. Of course their painted body color.
Most of you know how much work goes into the prep to get a car smooth enough to lay down black paint to look like a mirror so it was blocked. primed. and blocked until it was "ready". The car was painted 98 S 10 black with Du Pont base. color sanded and then custom flames were added from the bottom up to break from tradition. Once all this was ready of had 4 coats of Du Pont Chro Max laid on top. then came many hours of wet sanding to get to a mirror like finish. The pictures show the reflections buy it has to be seen in person. reading a book is possible in this paint. There are other details under the hood for a true finished look that many of these lack. not putting down anyone else's car in any way but just talking the detail here.
Mechanically it had the same lack of settling for average.
The engine and transmission were pulled from a wrecked 88 IROC and sent to the better shops respectively here in town. The engine was gone through. it has all new internals including . 030" over on the pistons and a bump in cam size but the compression was left alone with knowledge it was getting the power adder. It was painted black to follow the theme of the car. with just the right amounts of bright accents to set it off. The transmission was setup with a heavy duty front cage. stage 2 shift kit and mechanical lock-up so it engages at 50 mph. A custom driveline was made to mate it to the Ford 9" rear end. it has 3. 70 limited slip rear end so it won't give you grief while driving normally and will only let one wheel go for a few turns before the other joins the party. The axles are 31 spline Milodon and are plenty strong for this combination. The Super Charger is an old school B&M 1. 44. just enough to give you the boost when needed but not more than you'll ever use on the street. Again. not being satisfied with box stock he took it down to Super Charger USA in LA and had then tear it all down and blue print it so it has very tight tolerances. It feeds a 600 double pumper. if you look in the pictures it has the fuel lines reversed so it has a cleaner look. The fuel is fed from an original style tank and a Holley fuel pump via 7/16" lines.
It has the aluminum radiator with 2-1" tubes and electric fans. 705 steering upgrade and a Denso A/C compressor.
The interior is finished with leather everywhere. the seats. dash. door panels with plenty of custom stitching including it's name on the seat backs. There is a custom center console that has storage and flips around to give you a place to put your bottled water or early morning car show coffee. The rear seat are custom matched to the front with the headrests built in.
The dash has Dakota Digital gauges. the column is an Ididit tilt. custom CD stereo with speakers in the doors and rear deck. Headliner is new and even features a clock and a place to store your sunglasses. Everywhere you look inside just emphasizes the detail through out. The panel on the passenger side has an LED panel for the passengers. see pic below. The trunk is finished off with a separate stereo system for the shows that includes a video system to play movies or just run a slideshow of pictures of the car if you like.
I know I didn't/couldn't cover every detail on this car. I wanted to touch on the high points to give you a good idea of what you would end up spending $80 K+ to duplicate but you aren't going to have to with this car because the owner is realistic in his expectations. The car only needs to have some general cleaning of the underside. it's finished off nicely but didn't get detailed when the top did. The owner took many of these picture before bringing it over because of schedule conflicts but I did get some of them as well so I've seen it and had to get the drool towel out as will you. I think he hit the right combination of things with Black Smoke. there may be nicer but not for the money. I have additional pictures if you need them so send me your email address if you want to see something in more detail. The car is close by my shop so I can get any other pics you need them and don't already have them. Don't pay attention to some of the picture dates as that camera didn't get setup before shooting them.
Black Smoke was shown once 11 years ago and it won best of show. sponsors trophy and merchants award at that show never been shown again so you are buying a car that nobody will say "isn't that what's his names old car". It's turn key and ready to enjoy right now!
There is a Buy-It-Now or you can make an offer but it just don't make sense to throw out an low offer on a car like this. All reasonable offers will have to be run up the flag pole and the owner makes the call.
There is no interest in any trades. the owner is not in a position to be able to get out and enjoy the shows anymore. I welcome inspections. the car is in Clovis. CA. close to my shop and can be viewed by appointment. The winning bidder will receive clear California title for the car. I can assist with arranging shipping to your location or make recommendations for shipping. of course it can be picked up in person after we have received funds. This car is located in Clovis. CA.
