This is an opportunity to acquire a rare 1912 BENZ Open Tourer 8/20 that has recently completed a 4 year frame-off restoration by the renowned Mercedes expert "Bruce L Adams" of North Carolina. This automobile has a very interesting provenance as detailed below.
In 1913 this Benz was one of three identical vehicles sent to Australia to compete in a cross country endurance race. The organizer. Aussie sportsman Hugh McIntosh had been an avid supported of Benz in competition and wanted to capture the Australian title. Australia & USA had been the centre of competition since the 1908 French ban on Grand Prix racing in Europe. Two German drivers from Benz prepared the three vehicles in early 1914. During a practice run from Darwin to Idlewood. one of the cars ran off the road and struck a giant anthill near Victoria and retired as a write-off. A local farmer obtained the totaled vehicle and after repairs used it as farm equipment for the next 50 years. World War I forced the cancellation of the race and the German drivers were ordered back to Germany. The two remaining machines led a quiet life until decades later when Daimler Benz acquired the best to the two vehicles. That car is now in the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart. The remaining Benz was restored. After participating in the 1986 300 mile rally (to celebrate Mercedes 100 year anniversary) it wound up in the hans of a well known Japanese collector and was lated imported to the United States. This 20 HP Benz . with its Krupp nickel steel frame sold for 9. 00 Gold Marks with body when new and was referred to as the "Quiet Benz"
