1975 VW Trekker - ‘CAMO 182'

Volkswagen made the Model 181/182 between 1969 and 1983 under various names – eg Kurierwagen. Trekker. Thing. Mexico and Safari. This example is one of the rare original UK right hand drive Trekkers – only around 200 were sold in this country.

‘Camo 182' was first registered on 6 August 1975 and had a complete ‘nut and bolt' restoration and customisation in 2003-2005. She was featured in the July 2004 edition of ‘Ultra VW' and in the December 2006 edition of ‘Volksworld' magazine. She won prizes at various shows in 2005/2006 and was part of the Volksworld Show at Sandown Park in 2007. There is a video on YouTube (http://youtu. be/FHWJ1t5b9Ys or search ‘resurrection of Camo 182') which includes lots of the rebuild photos.

The main changes are:

·        Uprated (original) engine – 1641cc

·        Twin Kadron 40mm carbs

·        Bosch 009 distributor

·        Twin Zoomie chrome exhausts (which give her a really aggressive sound)

·        Body lift with stiffening frame (see video)

·        Suspension lift

·        Buggy headlights

·        Halogen indicators

·        Bus gearshift with original hand grenade

·        Custom paint

·        Camo upholstery

·        Alpine stereo (in ammo box)

·        Chrome 15” buggy wheels with 215/75 all terrain tyres

The only known faults are a small oil leak. a slightly worn driveshaft boot. the odometer doesn't work (although the speedo does) and the engine lid seal is missing.

She is a real summer motor. As you can see the doors lift off and the windscreen folds down. She has no weather equipment apart from a shower cover but there is some spare camo material which is probably enough to get a tonneau made.

I have owned her since January 2007 and throughout that time she has been garaged and has had very little use. She is still as clean underneath as she is on top. However. an impending project means that it is time to let her go. If you are into stockers she is probably not for you. nor if you fancy a slammed down bum dragger. but if you want to stand out from the crowd then she could be yours for £7. 00 or a decent offer.
