This rare Packard Henney Ambulance has it all. rarity. usability and an amazing history.
"Sherman" was based in the 1940's at Muroc Army Air Force base in the Mojave desert. California. Muroc was the epicentre of test flying and high speed research. It's where Chuck Yeager broke the speed of sound in 1947 in the Bell X1. Lots of brave test pilots died pushing aviation barriers at Muroc. The base was later named Edwards and it's where the Shuttles landed.
The Packard ended up without an engine when the previous owner. a sculptor and restorer decided it had to be saved in 2005. The body was perfect. completely rust free. so he decided to build a usable. classic that looked original.
He installed a 350 Cu in Chevrolet with a new 700 R4 automatic box. new driveshaft. new Ford 9" rear end. new power steering and disc brakes. new front and rear suspension. He also replaced the glass and rubbers.  The interior was totally refurbished. new headlining. side panels. door panels. and carpet. What he built is superb. It has the patina of a 75 year old classic military vehicle. but the reliability of a modern car. The previous owner and two mates drove it from the big swop meet at Hershey. Pennsylvania to his home a 100 yards from the ocean in California in under three days! 3000 miles in three days. thats fast and reliable by any measure. Plenty of room to stretch out too.
Although a sculptor he is also a renowned expert at restoring dashboards. He restored a dashboard on a Pebble Beach concours winning Kaiser Darrin. Every piece was individually made from epoxy to replicate the original. a true work of art. He did exactly the same for the Packard. including moulding a new steering wheel form scratch only using the original frame. It took over 400 hours to complete. The Kaiser Darrin dash was $20K.
I have driven the Packard and can vouch that it drives. stops and handles brilliantly. even more incredible when you realise it's 21 feet long! From the outside you have no idea that this beast can do 100 mph safely. This car is a true one off. a very usable classic. immensely practical. especially if you have a lot of friends. The rear space is huge. Sherman would make a superb tow vehicle for an historic race car or it's got Goodwood written all over it. You can announce your arrival in style. The siren works! I can also vouch that driving this on UK roads is extremely easy with power brakes and steering. She starts first time and cruises at 70 mph beautifully.
WARNING. Be prepared for hoots. waves. thumbs up. photos. marriage proposals. offers for swops. trades and God knows what else. Driving Sherman is like a rolling party. At traffic lights an ambulance driver offered to swop his for mine. I'm not sure what the patient in the back thought.
Registration has been applied for. Being pre-1960 no MOT is necessary. P/X for up to 10K will be considered. especially a Willys Jeep.
