MERCEDES 380 SL R107 1981 83,000 mls restoration project for sale

Current customer rating: current rating for this car(2.5) based on 665 votes

For auction is my 1981 Mercedes 380SL in Manganese Bronze. (Also called cappuccino by some) I am a Mercedes enthusiast and a long term MBOC member and have owned the car since 2000.

When we bought the car we replaced all the brake hoses. coolant hoses. oil cooler. re-cored the radiator. distributor cap. plugs and leads. The Mexican hat alloys were stripped and powder coated and there is a pile of receipts for other replacement parts.

The only welding done to date is in the spare wheel well.

Otherwise it is an unmolested and complete car.

The mileage is 83552 and I have all the MOT certificates from 1985 to 2007 when the car was SORN.

I will try to list all the bits which will require attention

Front wings corroded near headlights and to rear of wheel arch

Fluting by nearside rear wheel arch corroded

Front of sills and jacking points corroded

Section under battery tray corroded into nearside front wheel arch

Offside of boot near bumper mounting corroded. (not visible above the bumper)

Lower front panel corroded

The paintwork overall is tired and faded

Cloth on driver's seat squab is worn through

Brake pipes corroded

Fuel level sender not working

Some surface corrosion on scuttle panel at the bottom of the windscreen

4 inch knife slash on side of soft top and soft top windows cloudy

These are some of the good bits

The cabin is dry and the floors are sound although the sound deadening mats are not present

The plenum chambers are solid as is the central bulkhead area below the heater blower

The petrol tank chamber has no corrosion and neither does the tank (inspected when the tank was removed for cleaning and a new Bosch fuel pump was fitted in the last 18 months)

The car starts on first turn of the key and idles correctly

Oil pressure is good

Gearbox is smooth through all gears The hardtop is not showing any corrosion

The chrome-work is in good condition

This is a reluctant sale and I have been honest about the condition of this car but I am also aware of the potential it has to offer and this is reflected in the start price.

Please contact me to arrange a viewing during the auction. the car is in Leicestershire. I will accept cash on collection.
