HISTORY
The Hudson Motor Car Company was known for producing durable. well engineered but conservatively styled automobiles. That reputation was to be forever changed on December 7th. 1947 when Hudson introduced their new 1948 models in nationwide showings. Banners proclaimed “This Time It's Hudson”. The cars won instant acclaim from the public. Production had actually begun on October 12th. The tremendous factory conversion effort took only 23 days. Hudson spent $16. 00. 00 for development and new production equipment. The new car was revolutionary in that virtually no parts interchanged with the 1947 models. except the eight cylinder engine. which was essentially the same. The car had the lowest center of gravity and the lowest roofline of any American car without sacrificing headroom. due to the floor pans being attached to the bottom of the frame members instead of the top as all previous American cars had been. While the 1934 Chrysler Airflow and the 1941 Nash 600 had been the first production unibody cars. the new Hudson was significantly more rugged in construction and offered a sleek new design that was way ahead of the competition. The new body design was termed “Monobilt” because the body structure was of welded all steel construction.
The Legendary Hudson Hornet was introduced for the 1951 model year. Hornets immediately started burning up the racetracks and byways of America. The last year of Detroit Hudson production was 1954. By 1954 the single carburetor Hornets were rated at 160 Horsepower due to better valve relief and a more aggressive camshaft. The Twin H Power models were rated at 170.
The 1954 Hornet Sedan featured in this auction was a very late production car built 402 cars before the end of Detroit Hudson production in October 1954. It was a nice original low mileage car when sent to Davis Restorations in Charleston. Illinois around 1990 for a complete restore. The car was completed in 1992 at a cost of over $20. 00. This car won the Peoples Choice Award at the 1994 Hudson Essex Terraplane Club National Meet in Irving Texas! The current mileage is 46. 20. I believe this to be the actual mileage. It is equipped with Twin H Power. standard shift with Overdrive and a 3. 90 rear axle. It is loaded with accessories to include an electric gas cap. directional signals. day / night mirror. Windshield washers. remote spare filler. Radio (which has been upgraded to an AM/FM conversion). Heater. door edge guards and fingernail guards. Fog lights. Dual spotlights. Backup lights. seat belts and a recent Air Conditioning system which is Ice Cold! It is also equipped with New wire wheels and premium Goodyear wide whitewall radial collector car tires.
CONDITION
The 1954 Hudson Hornet offered here is one of the best anywhere! It was a great Low Mileage car to start with. This car was treated to a very comprehensive restoration by one of the best. It has been lovingly cared for by a longtime Hudson Club member. I have been asked to list it on Ebay for this owner. It sports a Mirror image Black finish with sparkling chrome and Stainless! The car was upgraded with a 12volt conversion to accommodate the new Air Conditioning system. The interior was very recently completely redone by a high end shop at great expense to include the trunk being finished to a higher level than when new! The windows were recently tinted and all of the felts and division bars replaced. The electric clock still ticks away the hours. I do not believe that there are any defects in this car or that any work remains to be done! This is a whisper Quiet. matching number. great running Hornet with Overdrive. It really runs Strong! It is currently Licensed. Insured and on the road. There were some bugs on the front visible when the photos were taken as it had just been driven 200 miles that day! All the receipts for the work performed on this car over the years will be included.
