Introduced in 3. 8 litre form in 1961. the Jaguar E-Type caused a
sensation when it appeared with instantly classic lines and 150 mph
top speed. While. inevitably. the car's stupendous straight-line
performance and gorgeous looks grabbed the headlines. there was a
lot more to the E-Type beneath the skin. The newcomer's design owed
much to that of the racing D-Type and. indeed. the E-Type would be
one of the last great sports cars developed directly from a
successful competition ancestor. Just as in the D-Type. a monocoque
tub formed the main body/chassis structure while a tubular
spaceframe extended forwards to support the engine. The latter was
the same 3. 8-litre. triple-carburettor. 'S' unit first offered as
an option on the preceding XK 150. With a claimed 265 horsepower on
tap. the E-Type's performance did not disappoint firstly. because
it weighed around 500 lb less than the XK 150. and secondly because
aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer used experience gained with the D-Type
to create one of the most elegant and efficient shapes ever to
grace a motor car.
This lefthand drive Series I was imported to the UK from Ottawa
at the beginning of 2014 when it was stripped down ready for
re-painting. At the same time. the engine and gearbox were removed
and when the rebuild started. the opportunity was taken to replace
the clutch assembly. replace the gearbox seals and fit a new clutch
slave cylinder. The car still has its original 3. 8 litre cylinder
block but has been fitted with a later 4. 2 litre cylinder head.
Before refitting to the E-Type. a number of other items were
checked and restored. This included rebuilding the braking system. br/>supplying and fitting a 'spin-on' oil filter. overhauling the
prop-shaft and fitting a new exhaust system. Finished in Signal Red
with black interior. this exceptional example is supplied with the
paperwork for registration in the UK including an Mo T test
certificate which expires in January 2016 and the Ottawa
registration document. Also with the car is a file of invoices
which show the works carried out in the UK during 2014. This icon
from the 1960 s is regarded as one of the most beautiful cars ever
built and is one of the most useable investments in the world not
only as part of a car collection. but for use at rallies and
special events.
