For years. the 250GTO had been considered the finest sports
racer that Ferrari had ever produced. With an incredible racing
record which was only rivalled by its sensational driving dynamics. br/>the 250 GTO had already been cemented into sports car lore as
nothing short of a legend. For Ferrari to revive that legendary
moniker. the new GTO would be expected to match or surpass the
250GTO's record in motorsport. Looking to contend in the FIA Group
B rally circuit. Ferrari produced and designed the 288GTO in order
to homologate it for competition within that series. calling for a
production run of 200 cars. Group B was incredibly popular
following its introduction in the early '80s. especially in Europe. br/>and Ferrari was eager to jump into the fray as they were certain
that their car would be unmatched in competition. Sharing visual
similarities with the 308 and 328. there was no denying that the
288GTO was much more special. It could rocket to a top speed of
189mph. making it the fastest road car ever produced at the time of
its unveiling. Its acceleration was equally impressive and the car
could reach 60mph from a standstill in 4. 8 seconds and 100mph in
10. 2 seconds. Performance aside. the 288GTO's interior was graced
with a host of modern amenities. The Kevlar-framed bucket seats
were lined in leather and buyers could request air conditioning. br/>electric windows. and an AM/FM radio/cassette stereo as optional
extras. Other than those few extras. the 288GTO sacrificed nothing
to distract the driver from the task at hand. The new GTO clearly
resonated with Ferrari's clientele as 272 examples were built by
the time production ceased. which was over 25% more than the amount
required for homologation. The 288GTO was the first in the lineage
of modern Ferrari supercars and it remains incredibly rare. as very
few are seen out and about or even offered for public sale.

This 288GTO recreation used a 1978 Ferrari 308 as the donor car
and has been modified visually to a very high standard. The work
has been carried out by Berkshire Body Shop in Newbury at a cost of
£48. 00 with photographic evidence available of the modifications.
Visually this car is the same as a 288GTO; the bonus being that
this car sounds like a Ferrari. drives like a Ferrari and. more
importantly. is a Ferrari. The V5 registration document confirms
this recreation is powered by a 2926cc. V8 engine. with brisk
performance. In July 2014. a major service was carried out and new
cambelts fitted. Supplied with an MoT test certificate valid until
14th July 2015 and a history file. this Ferrari 308/288
is a superb example. With genuine 288GTO's costing anything up to
£2. 00. 00. this is a highly attractive proposition.
