1901 Renault 4 1/2hp Type D series E 2 seater.

Chassis number: 023
Registration number: A2743

A lovely single cylinder London to Brighton car with impeccable provenance including a period photograph of the car circa 1910 outside Ely Cathedral. The car is VCC dated. certificate number 1217 & has successfully completed the London To Brighton run on a number of occasions.

The car comes with a thick history file & copious detailed notes on the correct starting & running procedures for the uninitiated.

A2743 is smartly presented in dark green livery with red chassis detail and coachlining. It is furnished with brass oil side lamps with a brass oil rear lamp and bulb horn and has buttoned red upholstery. The coachwork carries coachbuilder's plates recording construction by E. Vicart-Fils (Seine). It is powered by a vertical. single-cylinder. water-cooled engine with atmospheric inlet and mechanical exhaust valves and features the traditional side-mounted radiators. so familiar on early Renault models. It enjoys the benefit of a three forward speed gearbox.

Starting the car is a relatively easy affair using the starting handle in conjunction with the decompression lever on top of the cylinder. Once started the engine runs lustily. its speed being controlled by the floor pedal moderator. Brakes are sharp & surprisingly effective. A little time needs to be spent familiarizing oneself with the controls & getting used to a right foot operated clutch.

The car being of 1901 origin is accorded early starter status being number 84 in 2014's run. A useful storage compartment is mounted behind the front seats. This car was part of a small collection of early cars built up by Vincents of Reading. notable motor dealers and coachbuilders. and is thought to have been part of that collection for some 45 or so years before that collection was dispersed in the 1960's. Its new owner kept the car for some 12 or so years. participating in the 1971 London to Brighton Run. Following the 1971 London to Brighton Run the car was laid up again and not used until 2005 when it once again completed the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. The last owner tells us that in a previous ownership the gearbox was rebuilt. including the fitting of new gears.
