The Daimler Dart was built in Coventry and launched at the 1959
New York Motor Show achieving great success in the North American
market. Built with a fibreglass body. the power was provided by the
2. 5 litre Edward Turner designed V8 that soon became revered for
the smoothness in its power delivery with 140bhp on tap.
Independent double wishbone front suspension at the front and half
elliptical springs at the rear with a live rear axle. kept the car
on the road with stopping power supplied by hydraulic disc brakes
on all four corners. The car was described as a 2+2 but the
bench-like rear seat offered very limited leg room unless the front
seats were pushed fully forward. Thirty black Daimler Darts with
the Borg-Warner Model 8. 3-speed automatic were used by the British
Metropolitan Police. Daimler were soon forced to drop the Dart name
when threatened with legal action by Chrysler's Dodge division. the
car was then re-named the Daimler SP250.

This excellent 1960 Daimler SP250 is registered by the Daimler
Lanchester Owners club to be a 'B' specification car giving it the
more rigid chassis. The car was exported when new. the vendor
believes it went to New Zealand retuning to the UK in 1997. The new
owner carried out an extensive restoration but unfortunately did
not keep very good records. it comes with bills totalling £8. 00
from this time but a lot more was spent for which there are only
hand written notes. This restoration included an extensive engine
rebuild. electronic ignition. new radiator. Kenlow fan and splined
hubs with 72 spoke wire wheels fitted. The car was also repainted
and completely re-trimmed including matching leather hood bag. new
black soft top with matching tonneau cover. The vendor purchased
the car in 2009 and drove it to his home in the south of France
where it remained until he returned home in 2011. since then this
SP250 has attended a number of classic car shows. Finished in blue
with tan leather interior. this SP250 is supplied with a V5C
registration document. an MoT test certificate which expires in
June 2015. a file containing invoices. notes relating to the
restoration. old MoT test certificates. handbooks and a CD Rom
containing the full workshop manual. This is an excellent and very
usable example which was a favourite with the UK Police of the
time.
