When Jaguar merged with Daimler they had a great 2. 5 litre. V 8
engine that Edward Turner had recently designed and had been
putting into the enigmatic Daimler Darts. They discovered it
fitted nicely in the Mk. II body shell and had the added bonus of
being quicker than the entry level 2. 4 litre XK units and the
wonderful burble of a reliable V 8.
Being designed by Turner. it shares at least eight parts with
the Triumph T-120 Bonneville motorcycle: its pistons! The
V 8-250 used domed motorcycle pistons to achieve its compression
ratio.
It is lighter-weight than the XK-engined Mk. II so has better
fuel economy and handling.
It has the option of a four- speed
manual gearbox with overdrive or a three speed automatic
gearbox.
Prices of these V 8 Daimlers have been rising recently and in
good condition are proving popular. The pivotal aspects. as with
the acquisition of all classic cars. are the history and condition.
When invoices detail extensive works undertaken. you can breathe a
sigh of relief knowing the car has been correctly maintained
throughout its life regardless of cost.
Fortunately. C. J. Car
Body of Sussex confirm that this particular car. in 1993. was
completely dismantled. stripped to bare metal and restored. This
included re-stuffing the seats. new carpets. re-finished woodwork
and new roof lining. Indeed since then (and prior) there has been a
consistent level of attention paid to TPO 617 F culminating in 2007
with a 'Freshen-Up' costing over £4. 00. Presented in silver with a
contrasting black leather interior and the desirable manual
gearbox. this well documented example is described by the sole
owner from new vendor as in extremely good condition throughout.
All you have to do is step inside.
