GARAGE/ "BARN FIND" 1966 PORSCHE 912 (911 WITH 356 ENGINE) *NO RESERVE AUCTION* for sale
Current customer rating: (387 votes ) based onOriginally registered KYG 180D. then XUX 11. I have the Letter of Origin here from Porsche GB for this factory 5-speed. optional 5-dial 912 that states the all important chassis/ VIN and engine numbers are matching.
Depending what you read. there are widely acknowledged to be between just 35 and 50 original right hand drive 912's now in existence. Not to be confused with the 10's of 1000's of LHD's manufactured - many of which are still registered worldwide. this is one for the real enthusiast. proficient home restoring speculator or serious collector.
Car was originally Aga blue (see pic 12. taken between 2002 and 2004) and last taxed & MOT'd in June 2006. when it went in for a repaint in its current grey - and also when I believe the incorrect SC(?) rear wings were fitted. I found & bought it just over 2 years later. pretty much exactly as you see it here - except it now has the pair of brand new at that time Karmann Konnection supplied front wings (costing £1700) and glass (with brand new Genuine Porsche screen seals front & rear) all fitted.
She sits right. starts first turn of the key. drives through the gears. steers and stops. I've also just spent £600 at a renowned Porsche specialist on a full engine service (including plugs. points. condensor. air/ oil filters. distributor etc). together with a new battery.
It is however going to require welding for its next MOT – to the sills (see pic showing NS b-post bottom). floor. inner wings and under the fuel tank/ front boot area. I have been quoted £557 + vat for a pair of brand new. front & rear Genuine floor sections here in the UK (you may just need front or rears. left or right). while Genuine inner sills are £292 + vat for the pair. a Genuine factory fuel tank support being £458 + vat etc. Alternatively. you could source cheaper. spurious items here. import from the US if they work out cheaper at the new. improved exchange rate of late - or even be skilled enough to make your own up your own repair sections where possible.
To help facilitate repair and the external return to original. a pair of new Genuine Porsche outer sills are supplied with invoice stickers (£152. 75 each). together with a New Old Stock OSR quarter panel from the very helpful Julian at Karmann Konnection and a sound. media blasted NSR off a SWB from the ever friendly/ knowledgeable/ resourceful Max at Revival Cars (new items from Porsche otherwise approx £850 + vat each). A brand new Genuine bonnet seal is also supplied in its unopened bag.
With just 95. 35 miles believed genuine (84. 86 recorded in August 1992. then 94. 52 in June 2005. backed up with 13 MOT certificates dating back 22 years). car comes with the interesting/ valuable reg UCA 117D (U CAN D0. U CALL 70. ?). current V5 and a folder of history/ bills including correspondence with AFN & an invoice from 1970 when Mr Pickles parted with £760 and his Rover 2200 to buy it!
Judging by the documentation. the car was well known to the Porsche 912 register – while the Porsche GB window stickers. period Mota Lita steering wheel. and documented “Lobru” driveshafts/ Cibie headlamp/ alloy wheel upgrades all hint at a sporting past that I have not investigated further.
Inside. the distinctive. authentic “Old Porsche” smell hits you as soon as you open the nice-shutting doors (have they ever been off?) Everything is there – carpet needs replacing. but the original tan seats & door cards have no rips or tears. windows roll up & down. rear view mirror & 5-speed wooden gear knob are both present. rear opening window catches stay open. even the radio turns on. The rear seats also have 1970's(?) Securon belts fitted.
Outside. the chrome appears original and I'd describe this as very good. even excellent in parts for its age. I have resisted the temptation to wire wool all of it – I'll leave that for you to get the satisfaction from! The 15" alloys with Porsche centre caps were wrapped in brand new. matching Uniroyal Rallye 185/60 tyres all round in 2006. They all hold their pressure and have clearly had very little use since.
As far as I can see. this Porsche is totally complete barring spare wheel. tool roll. NSR bumper corner trim & OS internal door release button (all small items. plentiful on ebay or from either www. revival-cars. com or www. karmannkonnection. com) - even including the Porsche & 912 rear badges (shown in pic 10). Sidelights. headlights and indicators all work.
With values of some 356's and early SWB 911's having sky-rocketed into the £100k+ stratosphere in recent years. the market is already waking up to what the equally vintage 912 with its lighter weight & better weight distribution/ fuel economy (36 imperial mpg when new!) than the bodily identical 911 - and 4-wheel disc brakes etc over the 356. is worth. As an indication:
* Car and Classic currently has a same spec "completely restored" yet as "original as possible" 1966. RHD. 5-speed. 5 dial. with similar mileage but steel wheels advertised at £49. 50
* Silverstone Auctions in April 2014 achieved £29. 70 + indemnity (so over £34k total) again for a 1966 RHD. 5 speed. 5 dial. on steel wheels - with almost identical mileage @ 95k). Car was by professional account far from mechanically perfect at time of sale - and described in the literature as being painted in 1999. it was apparently otherwise unrestored.
Prices are still continuing to rise sharply. but expanding businesses and increased family commitments have sadly made me realise I'm not going to get round to doing this car justice any time soon.
An opportunity unlikely to be repeated. I have listed it with no reserve – and to be fair to all the serious people. any bidders with less than 5 feedbacks or from outside the UK. please contact me first or your bid will be cancelled. Any additional questions or pictures required. please ask and I will do my best to help.
I would strongly urge you to view/ inspect this car BEFORE auction end in its current storage unit as all bids are binding. Deposit within 48 hours. with full payment and collection within 7 days please.
My number in case I've missed anything off the listing is 07866 571210.
Good Luck!
