Current customer rating: current rating for this car(2.15) based on 612 votes
Here's a rare chance to own a very cool car in surprisingly good condition! Most outstanding is the interior condition. the dashboard still looks like new. Seats also show zero wear on the bolsters. They have mildew but can be easily cleaned
We cleaned the points. put some oil in the combustion chambers. some gas in the carb and she started right up! The car has not driven since 1985 and will need hydraulic restoration for brakes and clutch. but this will not be difficult to make a driver once again!
This 404 has been stored in a garage since 1985. The original owner purchased this car new in 1968 and drove it about 106k miles and then parked it in their garage in 1985. where it has sat until I retrieved it last week. This is the actual mileage. as verified by multiple oil change stickers on the side of the driver's door marking mileage in the late 70s and early 80s climbing through the 70k. 80k and 90K mile marks before going into hibernation.
I was really surprised how solid this car is. The only body rust is very minor and just starting around the passenger headlight and very small on one rear wheel arch. Otherwise this is a remarkably solid Peugeot. The rockers are excellent. The underside looks great with the exception of two small rust holes. These can be easily repaired. The trunk is great. The trunk floor is excellent. all still in the original green color. Comes shod with period Michelins.
The interior looks so good I initially thought that maybe there were just 6000 miles on the car (the oil change stickers on the door later confirmed 106k). The steering wheel. dashboard. gauges and glove box are all excellent with no cracks or wear. There is mildew on the interior. but it will clean off. I cleaned the driver's door panel with Fantastic. without issue-came up nicely. and all the trim pieces are present and in nice shape. save one missing hub cap. The original (removable) center arm rest (which I think was a factory option) still has a 1985 parking receipt inside. The foam of that arm rest is dried out inside. The seat foam and springs are in great shape. The headliner is very good.
The biggest issue this car has is multiple small dings and scratches from garage rash. The car has the original paint. and perhaps the next owner will refinish the car. so these dings would be addressed at that time. The best thing about this car is that it was stored inside all its life and is not rusty like so many of these cars.
The car has the tight steering I vividly remember when my family had one of these when I was a kid. Someone is going to have a great fun old car that will provide many miles of smiles and fun!
The owner passed away and I purchased the car from their estate.  It was last registered in 1985 in New York. NY does not title cars of this vintage.  The vehicle is sold with bill of sale and affidavit of ownership (which would be sufficient to register the car in Connecticut were I to keep this car).
This is a very cool car with lots of life left in it. and for anyone wanting to collect a wonderful old car with lots of personality. here's an inexpensive way to play. Plan on new water hoses and hydraulic restoration. E brake works great. Car rolls easily. Good fun ahead for the winner! Reserve is very reasonable! Have fun bidding!

Quite a lot of interest in this car and a nice mention on Bring a trailer. com today. with great additional information in the comments section by people with experience with Peugeots. check it out! For example. this is the first year 404s came with front disk brakes. Furthermore. the car was stickered 1968 when picked up in France by the original owner. who drove the car in France and then brought the car back to New York where he registered it with the license plates pictured.
I have posted a photo album of additional images at our website. in case you want to see more detail.   You can see the slideshow with more pictures by clicking here
