The first generation of Mercury S-55 proposed in 4 types of body style: sedan, convertible, fastback and hardtop. The model was made of engines with capacity of 300 or 330 horsepower in 1962 and 1963 respectively.
In 1966 Mercury S-55 has turned in the independent model", created exclusively with the types of exterior 2-door convertible and hardtop. This version of the car had an 8-cylinder engine with a capacity of 345 horsepower, was completed with 3-speed automatic or a 4-speed manual transmission. Both external and internal decoration of this generation Mercury S-55 differed sufficient comfort to compare it with the model of Mercury Monterey.
