  Description

1929 Willys - Overland Model 96-A "Whippet" Sedan

A 1974 restoration still very nice and a turn key driver !! a "rare" 173. 3 C. I. / 50 H. P. Inline "sliding / sleeve 6 cyl. w/ 3 spd. trans. Still sharp "Burgundy finish w/ black fenders and accent trim. It has wood wheels with "finely painted detailing" and still in very good shape !!. The spare is mounted on the rear. above bumper. It hsa a "Messco" radiator thermometer (still funtional) All gauges are still funtional at this writing and the miles read an accurate *19. 80 original"

*Also included.   ORIGINAL " OWNERS MANUAL" along with The "Knight- Overland "  "STARTER" magazine with many articles about the car. also some older reg. cards from prior owners.

The refurbished Gray interior is still very nice and appears "era correct" to the car. The sub structure is original and very solid. The frame. supports. and floor pans all of good integrity. The body panels. fenders are straight . original and in good order

The Willys- Overland "Whippet" had many unique features such as a Multi funtion switch -"Finger Tip Control" . as it was badged. It was the  horn button. which when depressed. "honked" the horn !!. When the "flowered" shaped button was lifted. it "started" the car !!. If you turned it once to the right. it would "turn on" the parking / side cab lights !!. Turn to the second position to the right. the "low beam" head lights "turned on" !!. Then finally. when turned to the "3rd position" to the right it would "turn on" the "high beam" headlights !!!!. Truly and amazing and convienient feature for a vehicle of this era and way ahead of "it's time" !!.

The trim is also nice. as the restoration still seemingly a"fresher" one. This car has been in a private home for it's early life driven proudly as a "trophy" from years of hard work in a time when cars were indeed a "luxury". People were envious of a car like the "Willys" and it served anyone who owned one very well indeed. "Powerful". . "fast". . "convienient". and well ahead of their time !!!.

Always garaged when not driven and covered by a breathable fabric cover. The servicing was done every(3) months for lubrication and the car was started weekly. It was often driven after a  warm up and driven a few milesat least once monthly.

A well maintained and cared for vehicle. now ready to find a new home !!

Some history :

* The Whippet name appeared quietly as a four-cylinder model in 1927. The little 30hp car was just over 12 feet long--the smallest car in America--so when Willys introduced ** a stretched 40hp. sleeve-valve six-cylinder a few months later. it was a lively performer. It soon became a lively seller as well. when Willys offered a six-cylinder model 93-A roadster for $695. the world's lowest-priced six. From 1928 through the stock market crash. times were as good as they'd ever get for Willys. The Whippet six-cylinder proved itself both swift and trustworthy in numerous trials and endurance runs. and put the company in third place behind Ford and Chevrolet. There was more to the Whippet than a pretty face. As compact as the crankshaft for the 178. 3-cu. in. engine was. it was supported by seven main bearings. and sent alloy Nelson Bohnalite Invar strut pistons stroking through 3-7/8 inches of travel. It featured pressure lubrication to everywhere but the piston pins. and an adjustable timing chain. Whippets grew with the times. so within a couple of years. they had 50 hp and could ride on a wheelbase longer than the entire 1927 car.

Truly a fine example ready for the parade or the show. or anyplace you'd like to go !!  Enjoy !!.
