1928 Chrysler Model 62 Roadster

Sports Car of the Day

This very rare 1928 Chrysler Model 62 Roadster. 85 HP. 3-speed with six-cylinder “red head” engine is one of the more advanced cars of this era.

For those that have studied the first quarter of the century of American automotive history they know that General Motors and Ford were the leading two automotive companies of the day.   The automotive corporation that was bringing up the rear was Chrysler.   Like the slogan for Avis. because we are number two. “We try harder”.   Chrysler also followed that motto and had to come up with many “innovative ideas” in order to get their cars sold with the stiff competition that they had from GM and Ford.

So you will find in the history of the Chrysler Corporation they were always coming out with advanced ideas in design and engineering. Chrysler was the first to come out with hydraulic brakes and was the first to come out with the idea that cars have to be fast. not only on top end but acceleration.   These were just a few of their selling points.   Other selling point was. “always in style” and in this area Chrysler usually had a leg up on Ford and GM in the early years and the car that you see before you is a perfect example of this situation.   Roadsters were always considered the sports car of the day and Chrysler roadsters in 1928 would leave the GM and Ford equivalents in the dust.   It also had hydraulic brakes and very snappy handling to say nothing of the very sleek look that started with the radiator headlights and ended with the slick design of the backend and rumble seat area.   Just take a hard look at the overall design of the car in this ad and compare it to a 1928 Ford Model A roadster or a 1928 Chevrolet roadster (both were four cylinders) and you will see how far advanced Chrysler really was.

The owner of this car has owned it for the past decade and has fully sorted the car out with a full restoration.   The car has been painted. chromed. upholstered with Connolly leather on the front seat and matching Naugahyde in the rear just as the original.   The brakes have been gone over and it is ready for show or tour.   The owner has mentioned that the car has been sitting the entire winter and has not been detailed out so it could use a good washing and polishing to get it ready for the spring and summer fun.   We know that the Chrysler roadsters and phaetons are quite popular in places like Australia and New Zealand and Sweden and have always been a favorite of a large segment of collectors in the United States and Canada.

This car has a very low reserve.   The seller is in his 70s and due to certain ailments does not have full physical facilities to drive the car for long distances. as he would like.

We know that the expression for Packard is “Just ask the man that owns one” but when it comes to Chrysler roadsters we would say that would also be a very appropriate expression.   You will find that anybody that has a 1925-1932 Chrysler roadster would only have high praise for the quality. design. handling and performance of the car.

Below you will find the list from the seller with of all the items that have been sorted out and rebuilt on the car. the seller is including the binder that details the work done to this car.

Title is clear.

The seller is including the cover and a binder full of details about the restoration work done to the car.

One thing that you should keep in mind is that this is a car that can cruise at 55 mph all day long in real comfort.   We have been told that even the rumble seat was designed for extra comfort at the seating position.   Even the leather on the front seat is Connolly leather. the best that you can get.   The engine has been completely rebuilt with new Egge pistons and valves replaced as necessary.   When it comes to roadsters it really doesn't get much better then a 1928 Chrysler rumble seat Model 62 roadster.

Remember this is not a four-cylinder car but a six-cylinder car with plenty of low-end grunt and high speed passing power.

Comments and questions to the seller:

from Hans Waldeck, dated 14 july 2017
Is this car still available? When so, do I understand the car is located in the USA? Wiil the owner sell the car to The Netherlands? Does he has pictires of the engine (both sides), the interior and the chassis and drive-train? I would be very pleased to receive those pictures. Kind regards, Hans Waldeck.
