1937 Cord 812 Sportsman - "The Lost Cord" - Restored - SEE VIDEO

1937 Cord 812 Sportsman Convertible Coupe - "The Lost Cord"

Offered on behalf of Monte Shelton Motors.

Serial Number: 1478F • Engine Number: FB1884 • Body Number: C92 - 215

This Cord Convertible Coupe was built in August of 1936 and sold as a Model 812 in 1937. It was one of just 130 standard Convertible Coupes built by Cord. during the life of the company. Dubbed the "Sportsman. these 2 passenger coupes were among the rarest models of an already rare marque.

The car passed through several owners over the years and was acquired in 1986 by a Cord collector and restorer in Portland. Oregon. It has remained under restoration for the past 28 years and thus is not listed in such books as Josh Malk's "Cord - The Timeless Classic. " It has been. for all intents and purposes. "The Lost Cord. "

After the passing of the owner. the restoration continued until 2014. It has been recently completed. To list everything done to this car is nearly impossible. Suffice to say. every component has been removed. restored or replaced. All wood in the body was refabricated in solid oak. The original Lycoming engine was rebuilt. as was the Bendix gearshift. transmission. the front-wheel-drive and all mechanical components.
The car has a total of less than 10 miles since restoration.

The stunning Gordon Buehrig-designed body was stripped to bare metal and refinished in correct Rich Maroon color with parchment leather interior. The panel fit and finish of this car is outstanding. Please see photos and video.

I have personally driven this car. Although I was not around to drive one in 1937. I would say it operates as good as new. The engine is silky smooth with plenty of power. The Bendix vacuum transmission shifts well and the front-wheel drive system operates as it should. In just my short test-drive and time shooting the photos and video for this listing. I was overwhelmed with the attention this car brings from the public. When you tell someone this is a 1937 car. they look at you with disbelief. One can only imagine that 78 years ago this must have truly seemed like something from another world. All tribute to the timeless design of Gordon Buehrig and the workers at Cord.

A realistic reserve has been placed on this car in keeping with its quality and rarity. Please bid accordingly.

Car is located in Portland. Oregon.

WE WILL HAPPILY SELL TO BIDDERS WORLDWIDE.
