Listing this car for my father. I drove the car for a few years and participated in most of the mechanical work. We have completed numerous vehicle projects. We do our own work and focus on attention to detail. However, this is a project that we are just not going to be able to finish. It's time for this potential weekend driver or restoration vehicle to go to a new home. I am with the car now, and will be here when picked up.
Car: I would consider this a solid project car for restoration.
However, you could put it back on the road with some non-restoration work.
Please read the description and feel free to ask questions.
Come on by and check it out. No problem.
Car has been in the family since 1995. Purchase info and owner's manual included. Alabama title. Currently located near Lenoir, North Carolina. Some receipts are also present from the previous owner. Driven regularly up to 1999. Rarely driven but registered up to 2009. Maintained in garage. Work started in 2004 for restoration; higher compression engine, air conditioning, hardtop, etc.. Parts were never added, or anything on the car disassembled. After 2009, not driven or registered. Left covered in the garage.
This year, we pulled the cover off, changed the oil, and added some gas. It started up. Coolant was still up to the top of cap. I drove it down the street. However, I would not take it out on the highway.
Being fairly familiar with the mechanics; I can describe most of the good and bad points about the car.
This auction is for the complete car with the soft top.
This auction DOES NOT INCLUDE: the additional rebuilt engine, hardtop, Air conditioning system, or parts lot. Just in case they are visible in any of the pictures. They are not part of this auction.
Those are being listed in separate auctions.
Can purchase all or individually.
Available for local pick up.
- 2.0 liter DOHC fuel injected, with manual transmission.
Points about this car: …..and I'm going to list all of the bad points…even if minor..
- -The body has dents from a hail storm. Can't see them in the pics; but, it was golf ball sized hail. They are there. stare at the hood pictures.
- - Driver's rear quarter was damaged/dented. Mostly fixed and coated with spray paint. Rubber end on bumper dislodged. View in pictures.
- - One of the rear brakes has a drag. Not bad, but it is there.
- -Power brake booster does not work. ( I drove without it for several years)
- -Engine runs but has a bad exhaust valve in #4 cylinder (low compression) It's the valve, we checked. Low compression, low power. This is the main reason that it was no longer driven regularly after 1999. It was still driven but with one cylinder low on compression. (repair this valve / head or replace it)
- -Exhaust pipe from engine detached from muffler. Would have to be welded or replaced. (new since sitting)
- -Fuel pump has intermittent connection. Appears to be the connection at the pump. Repair the connection, or run a temporary wire. (new since sitting)
- -One of the rear shocks needs a rubber bushing.(new since sitting)
- -I see several spots of rust that have penetrated the bottom of the driver's floor pan. One area from the top. I would not replace the pan. It is solid overall; but, I would certainly treat the rust and repair the areas. See the pictures.
- -Nothing on the passenger side.
- -You can put the roof down and stand on the floors.
- -I've been under the whole car. Surface rust on some areas but solid, no other holes or weak spots.
- -When we purchased the car I sprayed undercoating under the entire bottom; in addition to the factory coating. The factory undercoating is coming off. Looks like bad metal; but, it is not.
- -All shock and wheel well areas are solid.
- -No transmission issues.
- -No axle issues.
- -Interior is 40 years old. Cracking of / missing vinyl in multiple areas.
- -The roof is in fairly good condition. No problem going up and down, No holes, and the back window is transparent.
- - 4 Michelin tires are in good shape.
- - All of the lights work.
- - All of the instruments work.
- -I replaced the original 85 mph speedometer with a140 mph unit from an older fiat. The original speedometer is still with the car and is included (146k when switched). There was a fuel log book that noted the mileage on both odometers at the time of the change. I cannot find that book. It's yours when it shows up. Nevertheless, without it, I do not know the total mileage of the car. There are one, or two, more speedometers in the parts lot listed separately.
- -The power windows work. They are slow.
- -No cracks in the windshield / glass.
- -3 pairs of keys.
I would drive it with the fuel pump connection, exhaust pipe, and brake drag fixed.
I'd drive it across the country with the exhaust valve fixed.
I'd feel better about the drive if the floor pan and shock bushing were repaired.
I'd happily take the drive with the HC engine, hardtop, AC, and a new paint job.
This though, will be someone else's trip. Please, send a picture!
Questions…. no problem.
Take a look at my other auctions. We are selling a Hardtop, Air Conditioning setup, Separate Engine, Transmission, and Parts in individual auctions. Buy just the car or any of the optional features.
