1964 Chrysler 300 2 Door Hardtop

In 1964. the 300 was Chrysler's lower-priced continuation of their luxury sport machine. low. wide and heavily styled. Gisela James. of Phoenix Oregon. had to have one. and she remained this car's sole owner until she passed on and the car was liberated from her garage. where it had sat unused since 1995. In all those years. she managed to rack up just 85. 50 miles.

What Gisela left behind is one of those rarely found automobiles that exudes care of ownership. factory originality. patina. and an air of having never been modified or messed with. Maybe more than that. it exudes a time in America when cars were large. stuffed with horsepower. and made a definite statement.

The factory finish is Royal Ruby Red. it still looks good and the chrome still shines. The rear bumper shows it has been lightly tapped. We put those wheels and tires on (low profile Nexen tires on Boss aluminum wheels. 245-40-18s in the front. 275-35-20s in the rear. ) and deepened the suspension. the only nod to a more contemporary look. which we think works wonders for this body style. If the buyer thinks differently. the original wheels come with the sale.

The car has been raised for examination. The chassis is undisturbed by any ham-fisted intrusions. Thick factory undercoating is found everywhere. Not found is any sign of rust. There is typical light seepage from the rear main.

The 300. powered by Chrysler's durable 361 engine. is very good at sweeping

you mightily down the interstate in two-tons of rock solid comfort. The steering wheel is huge. but offers about as much resistance as your finger spinning a dial phone. Power is a key word here. in terms of both performance and amenities. which abound.

The interior is 60s gem -- push-button Torqueflight. white leather bucket seating. an acre of all steel dashboard. power driver's mirror and passenger remote. Golden Tone radio. air. power windows. power antenna (not working at the moment). a beautiful chrome grab handle. and perfect chrome slats spaced across the headliner. Original owner's manual and dealer service records in the glove.

After the 300 was wakened from its long hibernation. the fuel lines were blown out and it was fitted with a new gas tank. carburetor. muffler. brakes. and the AC was recharged. which now blows seriously cold. At present. the heater hose is disconnected. indicating a leak that needs repair.

Effortless power on tap here. Gisela must have enjoyed tapping the gas pedal and squirting this big cruiser ahead of more common traffic. The car rides in 60s Detroit fashion --  soft. smooth and strong. An American original in collector condition at a very obtainable price.
