http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/BMW_E9#3. 0CSL

Considered to be in the Top Ten of all time most beautiful cars ever built.

The BMW E9 3. 0CSL is a fantastic machine.

This particular example is 299 out of 500 made RHD for the UK.
VIN# 2285299 in Taiga Green with UK city pack. half leather Scheel sport seats and wood interior. 3003cc fuel injected straight 6. 4 speed manual. rear wheel drive. Majestic.

An extremely reluctant sale here Ladies and Gentlemen.

After a failed business opportunity I need to give up the BMW E9 to someone that as the time. money and wisdom to see this beautiful car restored to its former glory. I am hoping someone out there will take special care and give this motoring icon the attention it deserves.

What is the E9 valued at. as of June 12? > http://www. practicalclassics. co. uk/images/jun12Priceguide. pdf

Condition 3: £13. 50Condition 2: £22. 00Condition 1: £37. 00Concourse:   £47. 00

There are few UK 3. 0CSL examples selling well in north of £55. 00. if you were to ever sell on. Batmobile CSL with race kit sell in excess of £100. 00.

If you were to do the restore work yourself consider your costs to be roughly £10. 00-£12. 00 after shell chemical dip. rebuild. a variety of body repairs. new body panels. new fuel tank. new exhaust and full professional respray. Although it could be done for a lot less.

What's required. in my opinion

Full ground up restoration. This car deserves to be restored to beyond factory condition.

Chemical dip at Surface Processing or equivalent

rust repair to just about every component except aluminium doors. boot and bonnetengine bay repairfuel tank and rebuild of fuel line to engineexhaust system upto engine manifoldstruts. rails and rockersrear quarter panels and archesdrivers side front floor panel. hole in floorrebuild brake pipe system damage repair on front end. skin only not structuralnew rubber seals around door. rear glass and engine baydoor locks

The car is complete with all parts interior and exterior. Seat Head rests and all interior trim complete. Chrome wheel arch exterior trim (although not shown in photos)

Door locks will be required. the key is only for ignition. boot and interior locking glove box. There is no AM/FM radio. both missing key for door locks and radio are as the car came to me. These can be picked up on forums such as http://www. e9coupe. com

The engine will fire up and go into gear. both engine and transmission are bullet proof. Brake assembly is off the vehicle and fuel tank disconnected. so no test drives.

History

What makes the 3. 0 CSL unique? The 3. 0 CSL is a lightweight. performance-oriented version of the standard 3. 0 CS/3. 0 CSi coupe. It was originally developed as a homologation model for the German Touring Car Championship by a separate division within BMW AG. a division that would later become BMW Motorsport GmbH.

Where was the 3. 0 CSL first introduced? The 3. 0 CSL was first unveiled at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show.

Is the 3. 0CSL considered an M car? Because the 3. 0 CSL was conceived by BMW's competition department. which would be formally incorporated in 1972 as BMW Motorsport GmbH (later renamed BMW M GmbH). it is therefore generally considered to be the first M Series model. Though it does not carry an M badge. the 3. 0 CSL would eventually be offered with the tri-colour stripes that would form the icon of the M division.

What do the letters "CSL" designate? The "CS" suffix denotes "Coupe Sport" and was introduced with the Bertone-designed 3200 CS of 1962. The "L" was added to this version of the 3. 0 CS in order to denote "Lightweight"

How much lighter is the 3. 0 CSL compared to the steel-bodied 3. 0 CS? According to official BMW figures. a non-optioned 3. 0 CSL with all the aluminium body panels weighs 2. 68 pounds or about 440 pounds less than an equivalent 3. 0 CS. City Package-equipped models are 297 pounds heavier than the standard 3. 0 CSL at 2. 65 pounds.

Why is the later 3. 0 CSL sometimes referred to as the "Batmobile"?In addition to the standard front airdam and rear spoiler. 3. 2-liter CSL models could be fitted with a removable "racing kit" consisting of an air guide mounted above the rear window and an enlarged rear spoiler. both designed to increase downforce on the competition machines. The addition of these rather striking appendages resulted in the nickname "Batmobile. " Because these items were required on the road version for homologation purpose but could not be installed at the factory due to a conflict with various European laws. they were supplied as the removable kit.

Production Data

How many versions of the 3. 0 CSL were developed? BMW developed four different versions of the 3. 0 CSL over five years. all to European specification. The original version. produced in late 1971 and early 1972. utilized the standard 2. 85-cc M30 engine with twin carburetors and was only offered in left-hand drive. A fuel-injected model displacing 3. 03cc then replaced the earlier carbureted version and was produced in both left-hand drive and right-hand drive forms during late 1972 and early 1973. The final iteration of the 3. 0 CSL. all produced in left-hand drive and with a larger 3. 53-cc engine. was built in two distinct production runs during late 1973 (first batch) and 1974-75 (second batch).

How many of each version of the 3. 0 CSL were produced?

3. 0 Carburetor (LHD): 169 produced from 5/1971 through 7/1972
3. 0 Injection (LHD): 429 produced from 9/1972 through 6/1973
3. 0 Injection (RHD): 500 produced from 9/1972 through 1/1973
3. 2 injection (LHD): 110 produced from 7/1973 through 10/1973. 57 produced from 1/1974 through 10/1975

Where was the 3. 0 CSL produced? Like all 3. 0-liter E9-series coupes. the 3. 0 CSL was assembled at the Karmann Werkes in Rheine. Germany.

Does the 3. 0 CSL have a unique chassis number sequence? The original carburetted CSLs were based upon standard 3. 0 CS production models and therefore have no unique model code or chassis sequence. Instead. their chassis numbers (VINs) fall within the normal 3. 0 CS production sequence. However. all fuel-injected CSLs have a unique model code and chassis number sequence. Fuel-injected CSLs with the 3. 0-liter motor have VINs that run from 2275001 through 2275429 (left-hand drive version) and 2285001 through 2285500 (right-hand drive version). The final 3. 2-liter CSLs (commonly referred to as "Batmobiles") have VINs that run from 2275430 through 2275539 (first batch) and 4355001 through 4355057 (second batch).

Drivetrain

What engines were fitted to the 3. 0 CSL? The engine used in the first version of the 3. 0 CSL was entirely unchanged from the standard 2. 85-cc M30 inline-6 found in the 3. 0 S/3. 0 CS models. With an 89mm bore. an 80mm stroke and dual Zenith carburettors. this unit produced 180 hp (DIN) at 6. 00 rpm and 192 lb/ft of torque at 3. 00 rpm.

The second version of the 3. 0 CSL carried over this same basic engine configuration but the bore was increased very slightly to 89. 25mm (for a new overall displacement of 3. 03cc) and the twin Zenith carburettors were replaced by an electronically-controlled Bosch fuel injection system. Horsepower increased to 200 hp (DIN) at 5. 00 rpm and torque increased to 204 lb/ft at 4. 00 rpm. Though these were identical outputs to the standard fuel-injected 2. 85-cc unit found in the 3. 0 Si/3. 0 CSi models. the slightly larger displacement helped better suit the requirements of the competition version.

The final version of the 3. 0 CSL utilized a further enlarged version of the fuel-injected M30 powerplant with a longer 84mm stroke for a new overall displacement of 3. 53cc. Peak power and torque both increased slightly to 206 hp (DIN) at 5. 00 rpm and 215 lb/ft at 4. 00 rpm. respectively.

What transmissions were offered on the 3. 0 CSL? All 3. 0 CSLs were equipped with the same Getrag four-speed manual gearbox found in other three-liter E9 coupes and utilized the same gear ratios: 3. 855 (1). 2. 20 (2). 1. 40 (3). 1. 00 (4). This was mated to a limited slip rear differential (25 percent locking) with an axle ratio of either 3. 45:1 (carbureted model) or 3. 25:1 (all fuel-injected models).

Chassis
How is the suspension of the 3. 0 CSL different from that of the 3. 0 CS/3. 0 CSi? Though made up of the same basic MacPherson strut/semi-trailing arm design as all E9 coupes. the CSL incorporates the following changes:

Bilstein gas-pressurized shocksspecific progressive-rate springs with 20mm reduced heightincreased camber (1. 1-degree in the front. 1. 0-degree in the rear)

NOTE: CSLs are not equipped with front or rear anti-roll bars

What kind of steering system is fitted to the 3. 0 CSL? Like all E9 coupes. the 3. 0 CSL utilizes a ZF worm and roller steering system. though it is different in two respects: the overall ratio is slightly longer (18. 9:1 versus 18. 0:1) and it is not power assisted except as an option or when equipped with the available "City Package".

What kind of brakes are fitted to the 3. 0 CSL? The 3. 0 CSL is equipped with the same 10. 7-inch disc brakes on all four corners as the standard 3. 0 CS/3. 0 CSi models.

What size wheels and tires is the 3. 0 CSL equipped with? All 3. 0 CSL models are fitted with Alpina 7x14-inch alloy wheels wearing 195/70VR14 tires (originally Michelin XWX).

Cosmetics

How does the exterior of the 3. 0 CSL differ cosmetically from the standard 3. 0 CS/3. 0CSi?
The 3. 0 CSL can be distinguished from its 3. 0 CS/3. 0 CSi counterparts by the following items:

aluminum hood. doors and trunk lidchrome fender lip extensionsblack side stripe with the "3. 0 CSL" logoracing-style pin release for the hood*lack of front bumper*lightweight (5. 5 lbs. ) plastic rear bumper without overriders*"Verbel" laminated windshieldlightweight window glass*fixed rear side windows*lack of trunk lock and tool kit*Alpina 7x14-inch alloy wheels

How does the interior of the 3. 0 CSL differ cosmetically from the standard 3. 0 CS/3. 0CSi? The interior of the 3. 0 CSL can be distinguished from that of the 3. 0 CS/3. 0 CSi models by its unique three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel and Scheel sport seats in black cloth upholstery with black leatherette bolsters. In addition. the roof lining is also black.

What options were offered on the 3. 0 CSL? Though generally equipped to a minimal specification to retain the lightest curb weight. the 3. 0 CSL could be fitted at extra cost with the following features: power front windows (including standard glass). tinted windows (including standard glass). velour carpeting. locking gas cap. air conditioning. headlight washer/wipers and passenger-side mirror.

What is the City Package? A City Package was offered as an option on all 3. 0 CSL models and fitted to the majority of right-hand drive cars sold in the UK. Designed to make the 3. 0 CSL more usable as a daily driver. it consisted of the following items:

This is one of those cars and one of those projects that deserves your time. energy and money. The numbers stack up. the parts are available. the workshop manuals are there. It's a 40 year old motoring delight that will drive again. like a dream. If you need to further justify this to yourself. a wife or significant other. you could easily make money with this 3. 0CSL. as it is an appreciating asset and your investment will only grow in value as the years pass. This again is 299 out of 500 made with the UK city pack Fuel injected 3003cc in Taiga Green.

Extensive paperwork of repairs and MOT certificates from previous owner. I acquired the car with the full intention of restoring to better than factory new and possibly doing some vintage racing. I have driven maybe 500 miles in 11 years. with the car being off road. at times open to the elements and garaged for the majority. Unfortunately life took over.

Again this is a very reluctant sale. I will not give this special car away. and I don't really want to sell. However the E9 needs to go to a good home that can take better care than I can at this time. Please make sensible offers given the cars rarity and potential and don't waste our time. Thank you.

The car is garaged and available for inspection a ten minute taxi ride from Glasgow Airport.
