1940 Mercury 40 Merc Club Coupe 60s Rod for sale
Current customer rating: (54 votes ) based onTHE CAR AND THE STORY BEHIND IT: This is a 1940 Mercury Club Coupe that was built in the late 1960s. The car was recently donated to our Ministry to help with a couple of our overseas mission projects. 100% of the proceeds will go toward these projects. WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW for the whole story and all the details!!
The donor, a now 86 year old gentleman, explained to me how he ended up with this old Merc. In 1975 he saw a pickup truck advertised in the paper and when he went to look at the truck the lady also mentioned her ex-husband also had this 40 Merc street rod he wanted to sell. He was given an address and was told the car was in an old single car garage behind her ex-husband's new girlfriend's house. LOL! Yep. When he told to this girlfriend, she was not tp pleasant to deal with. He looked at the car through the small dirty glass panes on the garage windows and decided to forget about it. Five years passed and in 1980... WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW for the whole story!!
This car could be a daily driver, and starts every time, runs great, has a nice cam in it. The car was built in the late 1960s and spent most of its life in storage. The Casting # on engine is 3756519 = 1958-1962 283ci from Chevy Corvette or Station wagon. The block was bored to a 4" bore making it a 302. Engine block serial number F609CG = Made in Flint MI, June, 9th. "CG" indicates a 1959 engine 230HP, 4bb.
It has 2.02 Fuelly heads and has a healthy cam. From what I can tell it has 411 gears and is a posi-track. The rear end, I was told, is out of a 1955-1957 Chevy car. The car has a Muncie 4 speed with a Hurst shifter. Also Holly 4 Bar carb and intake manifold. The frame was reinforced and professionally made cross pieces were made for the transmission and engine mounts. Run great.
The car had no rust cancer. It started out a very solid car and spent most of it's life in storage. There is some surface rust on the front floorboards but not cancer. More details are in the video.
DETAILS: VIN: 99A230985. The RESERVE on this 40 Merc is well below value just to protect our sale. The car could be a daily driver. Almost everything works except the turn signals and the vacuum windshield wipers. The car needs some tinkering. All the glass is newer except the door glass which shows some bubbling in the plastic laminate of the safety glass. The original gauges are disconnected and all newer gauges were installed.
