1972 Mercedes-Benz 350SL 350SL Roadster

1972 Mercedes 350 SLI'd like to introduce you to Betty, my 350 SL. This car was purchased new by Betty Wolfe, a West Virginia lady and was meticulously maintained and cared for by her from July 1972 until her passing in 2020. The car was always garage kept and absolutely never driven in foul weather, the winter, rain, etc. Betty drove the car regularly from 72 to 75' and then the car was only used on rare occasions. This lady was likely the best record keeper I have ever came across. She had kept every single receipt for absolutely everything that was done to the car, in chronological order. She kept the car better than she kept records, which is hard to believe. This car is like brand new! Zero rust, ever! Interior shows like new as well. This 350 SL is a 1 year only car for several reasons. Well, first off this is the first year for R 107's in the US, and the only year they were badged as 350 SL's...they badged them correctly as 450 SL's starting in 1973. The chrome shifter base is also specific to 1972, and is actually a Pagoda piece. Also, DB-733 Phantom Gray is a 72' only color, and boy is it a very interesting and has become a wildly popular color in the past few years. These 72-73 R 107's are very unique and it's incredibly difficult to find a genuinely nice car. The reason being is the steel used to build them was not galvanized, and most burned into dust in 10 years if they seen any weather. These cars are absolutely not to be confused with the 74-85 450 SL's. These cars came with the desirable “short” or euro bumpers. Additionally they had no emissions equipment, and they made lots of power and in absence of catalytic converters...they had a much more throaty sound...not to mention excellent throttle response! These early cars will leave a 560 SL in the rear view mirror. This car is the epitome of excellence! Beautiful paint, interior, both tops are perfect and absolutely everything works. The car runs and drives perfectly and needs absolutely nothing. It starts right up with no hesitation or smoke. Runs very smooth! The trans shifts snappy and is responsive, brakes are all new and stop true. Tires are 2020 date code and have 500 miles on them or so. This car spent its entire life in West Virginia/Virginia and it's only had 1 driver. Betty is the only person who ever drove this car, she never let her husband, friends or even the kids drive it. She refused to valet park the car and even drive the car into the service bays herself, from what I was told. The car still has Virginia Historic plates on it, even though I am located in Illinois. I actually drove the car from Virginia to Illinois, and the car never missed a beat. If you notice there is a belt molding on the car that is aftermarket. These are “stick on” with a excellent easily removable glue that does not damage the paint. They were installed recently and can easily be removed, if you do not want them on the car. Additionally, a trunk dress up kit was installed. The original rubber mat still resides below that. I collect R 107's and know them inside and out.
