   1966 Porsche 912 SWB Coupe

This 1966 Porsche 912 Coupe is a beautiful little car.

There are few vehicles out there that can compare aesthetically to the early 911's and 912's.

Pure in form and function. you have to experience one for yourself to know what all the articles and in fact. entire books devoted to these special cars are all about.

Just in the past few years people have begun to realize the true value of these remarkable automobiles. and the prices have reflected accordingly.

This particular example is a 3 gauge. 5 speed. originally 6602. Polo Red. now obviously refinished in what appears to be a Gran Prix White or something similar. The paint is shiny and looks good. but is not concourse quality. The interior is in very good condition. dash recovered at some point. seats. headliner. carpets and door panels are all very nice. The gauges themselves are in very good condition and I absolutely love the green dials and chrome centered needles. Tires are in great condition. as are the 14” Fuchs.

At this point if you have looked through the 150 + photographs and watched the video. you will know that the motor in this example is not original. In fact it is not a Porsche motor. but a VW. I'm sure at some point in this cars life. the original 1. 6 litre expired for some reason or another and this VW motor was pressed into service. We are told it is 1776cc in displacement and it runs quite strongly. The heat works well. and the motor has both an oil pressure and temp gauge added to the 3 standard gauges along the lower part of the dash.

A huge concern on these early cars is rust. thankfully this car is quite dry and rust free. It has had both the front pan and front floor section replaced at some point. However all the suspension pickups. inner fenders and rest of the body appear to be rust free. There is a small amount of surface rust in the bottom of the smugglers box. but this is very minor.

If we were to keep this car I would be torn on either finding a 912 motor. they can be had for about $4k. or just putting in a 911 motor. This car with a 3. 0 in it would be a real hoot! Not that there is anything wrong with the way the cars drives now. it just seems like kind of a shame.

As far as the driving aspect goes. this one drives great! The gearbox shifts very smoothly. brakes are strong. car tracks straight. suspension action is well dampened and the car is free of excessive wind noise and leaks. The wipers and lights all function correctly and the charging system seems to be operating as it should be.

In closing. this is a great looking and driving early coupe that would be a very solid candidate for many different uses.

Leave it as it is. put a stock motor in it. or turn it into a bit of a hot rod with a 6 cylinder 911 motor.
