D.H.S.SPECIAL. Constructed in 1952/3 by David H Small of Barnett and Small who were JOWETT and BRADFORD agents in Farnham Surrey.Small built several specials during the fifties several fitted with Ford 1172 engines.This car appears to have been designed and built in a similar fashion to Buckler,Dellow,and Lotus as an allround low cost competition car suitable for Trials,Sprints,Hillcimbs, Rallies and perhaps circuits,as well as road use.Well designed and constructed using a Ford 1172 E 93 A engine fitted with twin SU carburettors and factory water pump.Gearbox is again Ford with close ratio gears.The front axle and suspension are Ford again with LMB type swinging arm modification to give a form of independant suspension.The chassis frame is an A shaped type made from 3-1/2 inch round tubing terminating at the rear with quater eliptic springs similar to an Austin Seven.The steering box is Ford and all the wheels are 16 inch and the wheelbase is 6 ft and 8 inchs.The brakes are all mechanical and could be improved as I have not removed the drums to inspect.The body is a very well made aluminium over welded tubular constuction, linked to the chassis frame by welding.The body nose cone appears to be a modified panel from a Bradford Van! The paint colour was dark green and is now faded with a lot of flaking but is the original coat.The car drives very well. Starts freely and the engine is strong and quiet.I hve used the car on the road several times this summer and is fun to drive.Possibly a good car for the recently introduced class for pre fiddle brake trials cars with Historic Sporting Trials.Recorded with the DVLA on V 5 C as DHS SPECIAL

I have period pictures of it in a period trial.The windscreen folds flat.
