RMB Gentry Kit car. MG TF Replica.

Built by myself over an 8 year period, to a self confessed OCD level of detail and without compromise.

It is finished in Old English White with red Leather seats. I have paint left over for touch ups.

The V5 correctly shows it as an RMB Gentry, with historic status.

I purchased the partially started kit on 2010, the last image is how I purchased the car. I still have the advert for the car when I bought it.

The kit was supplied by RMB in 1989 and the donor vehicle was a 1968 Triumph Herald 12/50. During the build I upgraded it with Triumph Vitesse Mk2 2ltr engine, gearbox, propshaft and diff.

I adapted the brackets to move the engine and gearbox back 3.5” with the propshaft shortened and rebalanced accordingly.

The chassis was stripped, minor welding was needed. It was shot blasted and repainted and then totally rebuilt with all new bushes, bearings etc. and upgraded with disc front brakes, Spitfire MKV rear spring system, Spax adjustable shocks on the rear, lowered Spitfire springs on the front.

I welded in extra bracing to the chassis since the original Triumph outer rails were cut off, in accordance to the Gentry build manual and in my opinion potentially weakening the rear outriggers.

It now has a Triumph GT6 rear diff with a 3.27:1 ratio, for more comfortable cruising.

New 15" wire wheels with 165/15 tyres.

Bespoke made radiator, an electric cooling fan with thermostatic switch.

The battery is mounted in a Rover P6 battery box behind the driver seat, leaving space under the bonnet for the original Triumph heater and a brake servo.

The dashboard is a Walnut look-a-like veneer (Kevasinga) on plywood and varnished.

All the gauges and switchgear are Triumph Herald/Vitesse to retain its original Triumph roots.

I was lucky to have sourced an extremely rare period Les Leston wooden steering wheel, restored and re-varnished, and fitted it to a Triumph Spitfire centre boss. It suits the car perfectly.

The wiring loom is completely remade strictly adhering to the colour coding from the Triumph Vitesse worshop manual. Using all period soldered bullets and flat blade terminals, (not a crimped terminal in sight). I incorporated a hazard warning system, with a Triumph switch, again adhering to Spitfire colour coding.

Front indicators are integrated in the side lights, rear indicators are mounted on the rear deck panel. Since indicators were not used in 1950's TF's, I wanted to make them as discreet as possible.

The seats are late 90's MGTF leather seats. All other trim is bespoke made by a coachtrimmer and fitted by me.

The lap belts are securely mounted to the chassis of the car and not just bolted through the body as I have seen on many a kit car.

Chrome Bumpers, overiders and bumper irons are new reproduction of 1950's TF from Rimmer Bros, bolted to fabricated brackets mounted to the chassis.

Hood frame is a new 1950's TF reproduction from Rimmer Bros, adapted to fit snuggly inside the car when retracted. Hand shaped Ash wood top rail, fitting onto Rimmer Bros reproduction TF studs in the top of the windscreen frame.

The hood covering is bespoke and the half tonneau covers the hood really neatly when retracted.

Please be aware;

If you are over 5' 8”, you will have difficulty getting in and out of the car, just my opinion.

The steering is quite heavy when stationary, due to the weight of the 6cyl all-cast iron engine, the 165 tyres and the smaller steering wheel.

I have 100's of photos showing the build together with the original RMB builder's manual and the Gentry Technical reference library.

The car won the Gentry Register Car of the show in 2019 and the Triumph Sports Six Club, Southern Area Meet, Best Special in the same year.  I will include the trophies in the sale.

It hardly saw the light of day last year and I am now focused on a full nut, bolt and carpentry restoration of a 1930's Rover, so I am reluctantly putting the gentry up for sale for somebody else to cherish, use and enjoy more than I have. I have got great satisfaction from building the car and would love to see it go to somebody who will be part of the Gentry community and enjoy it.

Thank you getting this far in my description. I have tried to describe the car as concisely as possible on an ebay advert.

Please note; Low offers will be ignored and I will not sell the car to you, unless you have come to view the car or at least we have had a proper telephone conversation.

Please message me to arrange a viewing or to discuss further.

Many thanks

Barrie

Hi Barrie, I am admiring your car, it is indeed a credit to your skills. I am a recently joined member of the register and hope to be an active member in the future. I owned a 1955 1500TF in the 60's and needless to say wish I had never parted with it. The Gentry is, in my option the best replica if, like yours, properly built. I have carried out considerable research prior to deciding and the joining the register so now active looking to purchase. I am in Scotland, live near Loch Lomond, so travelling to view is difficult, especially as I am going through a 6 week radiotherapy course to cure cancer in my voice box. If you are in a position to consider an offer please contact me, my email is [email protected]. Regards, Alex
