1973 MGB GT - Teal Blue, Restored, Overdrive, Massive History - MG BGT MGBGT

 There's nothing quite like an early 70s MGB GT. The perfect mix between 60s sportscar design and the refinements of the later cars. These cars are a fantastic investment, with prices rising all of the time.

This car has been in the long-term ownership of an MG enthusiast and has been built to use on a regular basis. The car has completed European trips and has been in regular use, covering around 5000 miles per year. In my opinion, if you're looking for an straight and honest (but not perfect!) example to use, enjoy and tinker with – then this is probably the car for you.

The car has a staggering amount of bills and receipts – probably the most comprehensive service history I've ever seen with an MGB! There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of receipts documenting expenditure, and the history file is comprehensive back to the mid 1980s. Also included is the original British Leyland ‘Passport to Service' which is stamped up to the late 1970s, as well as a copy of the original buff logbook – and details of all ownership throughout. It's as close to ‘full service history' as you'll ever get! An enthusiast owner who acquired the car in 1984 has kept a written record of all works carried out, as well as research into the previous owners. It's truly phenomenal!

Anyway, the car has had a great deal of works over recent years – it'd be far too difficult to list everything it's had, but here are a few examples of major works: 

·        New front wings, rear half wings new inner and outer sills, castle sections, and a full respray around 7 or 8 years ago. At this point, the car had a fairly major overhaul (lots of photographic evidence!) to ensure it was completely usable and reliable·        Ivor Searle reconditioned engine fitted·        Front and rear telescopic damper conversion from Moss Europe·        Rear axle overhaul (anti-clunk kit)·        New wool carpet set (£300+) and new door cards·        New fuel tank, rear springs, dual oil/water gauge·        New radiator·        New calipers, discs and hoses a couple of years ago

Bodily, the car is nice and straight. Obviously, because it's a few years now since the car was fully repainted, there are a few small areas of very minor bubbling and defects here and there, but nothing that's going to deteriorate in a hurry. The most obvious one is a bit of bubbling on the bootlid – see the picture. That said, the car presents very well indeed, as you can see in the pictures! In my opinion, it is much better than buying a car that's been painted very recently, as there could be all sorts of horrors hiding underneath the fresh paintwork. The panelwork is all very solid and straight, the gaps are very good and the doors shut with a satisfying ‘clunk' – showing that the replacement sills have been fitted correctly! The brightwork is all in good order with only minor pitting. The car sits on Minilite alloys with matching tyres (the tyres are only a couple of years old), plenty of tread remains.

The interior is also very clean and tidy. Leather seats have been fitted, along with new foams, and they are very comfortable indeed. The carpet set is in excellent condition, having been replaced around a year ago, along with the door cards.  A nice wood-rimmed Moto Lita steering wheel has been fitted which completes the look, as well as a wood dash kit, which admittedly could do with a coat of varnish. It's great to see the car still retains its original spec interior – so many are messed around with and fitted with cheap, nasty covers. A CD player has been fitted in the centre console, and front and rear dashcams have been wired in – easily removable if you don't want them!.

The engine starts readily and runs well, ticking over at around 750rpm. Ignitior electronic ignition has been fitted, and the alternator replaced a few thousand miles ago. It drives just as an MGB should! Oil pressure is excellent and there are no overheating problems whatsoever, thanks to the fitment of an electric fan. The brakes are nice and sharp, thanks to the fitted servo, and a battery cut-out switch has also been fitted – both sensible additions. Twin 12v batteries have been fitted. The 4-synchro overdrive gearbox selects gears nicely without fuss and overdrive engages quickly. 

You can see in the pictures that the engine bay is tidy and, body colour – it was repainted at the time of the restoration - it could be detailed further to look very nice indeed. Exhaust note is great and the car pulls and drives as it should.

Despite not needing an MOT, the car has been tested each year and you'll see that the MOT history is excellent. The car is, of course, tax exempt.

All in all, this is an absolutely charming little car that is absolutely ready to be used and enjoyed. You won't find many cars at this price that have been finished to this standard and have been in regular, reliable use. I travel all over the country to view these cars and this one is particularly good for the money I'm asking. If you're looking for a show-standard car, please double your budget and look elsewhere, but if you're looking for a nice, tidy, usable car that you can enjoy and improve as you go, then this is probably the car for you!

Viewing information – The car can be viewed at my workshop, observing social distancing rules and guidelines. The car will be carefully cleaned before and after each viewing. If the weather is dry, the car can be moved outside to allow for an open-air viewing.

Just check my feedback and you'll see that I'm a completely honest seller.  Do remember that there is no substitute for coming to see the car yourself.
