DESCRIPTION
Known for their legendary hand-built. quality vehicles. The Pierce-Arrow Motorcar Company competed against manufacturers like Packard. Cadillac. and Peerless for luxury cars buyers.
With other companies already utilizing more modern building techniques. Pierce-Arrow continued to offer a rather limited production quantity each year using its traditional. labor intensive process.
New for 1928 was the Model 81 series featuring vacuum-powered brakes. and smaller one-year only headlamps.
A new Pierce emblem was prominently featured on the radiator.
Pierce-Arrow built less than 5. 00 examples for 1928 making them wonderful pieces for pre-war collections!
This beautiful 1928 Pierce-Arrow Model 81 Five-Passenger Sedan is finished with a Desert Sand body. offset nicely with Black fenders and Pyramid Gray beltline. roof. and wheels.
Power is provided by its original. numbers matching 288. 5 ci Inline 6-cylinder engine making 75 horsepower. and 3-speed manual transmission.
The chassis rests on a 130” wheelbase.
According to records provided. this example delivered new from Faubel Motor Car Co. based in Oyster Bay. Long Island. New York.
It came specially optioned with the Bowman radiator ornament. New York City drum headlights mounted next the radiator instead the fenders. and rear floor area rug.
It stayed on the East Coast for the majority of its life passing between New York. Pennsylvania. Virginia. and Massachusetts until 2013.
It was extensively restored. both cosmetically and mechanically. during a multi-year long process that began in 1992. and completely in approximately 1997. The engine was completely overhauled with new Egge pistons & rings. new intake & exhaust valves. head & intake gaskets. Crower prepared camshaft. and rebuilt starter & generator.
The car also received all new wiring with rebuilt dash instrumentation.
During this same process. the exterior of the car was completely stripped to bare metal. and professional prepped and repainted with stunning results! The glossy. smooth finish throughout all panels is easy to admire! Adding to the character are expertly applied maroon & blue pinstripe accents on the body & artillery style wheels.
Inside. the wooden dash panel. steering wheel. and window frames have all been refinished.
The seating upholstery remains original with exception to the front seat back and rear panel being replaced with new material.
It should be noted that the original floor carpeting and seating material in the rear passenger compartment do show some age and patina. but remain very serviceable and quite presentable overall.
Supporting this is a Junior AACA Junior National First Place Award achieved in 1998.
An appraisal completed by AACA Senior Master Judge. Jeffery Locke. valued this Pierce-Arrow in August 2000 as “Outstanding appearance with a combination of very original and excellent restoration” at $48. 00 in #1- condition.
More recently in June 2009. the entire transmission was rebuilt The Creative Workshop in Dania Beach. Florida with new single row bearings. machined gears. resurfaced pressure plate. and new clutch.
We couldn't be more pleased to have such a great automobile grace our showroom. and look forward to delivering it to a new owner! A copy of an original owner's manual is included along with all restorations receipts. pictures. AACA First Place badge. and parts catalogs.
Please feel welcome to call with any additional questions.
