1973 Mercury Cougar for sale
Current customer rating:
Fantastic very Cool Car and 1 of 4. This 1973 Mercury Cougar XR-7 convertible was built on May 7, 1973 and is one of 4 examples equipped with a 351 ci 4 V V 8 and four-speed Hurst manual transmission for the model year. It was originally delivered to Owens Motors of Dedham, Massachusetts and was acquired by the seller in 2015. A cosmetic and mechanical refurbishment was carried out between 2016 and 2018, including body repair and a repaint in Bright Red. Equipment includes a white leather interior, a power-operated white soft top, air conditioning, an AM/FM stereo, and a spotlight. This Cougar is now offered with a Deluxe Marti Report, photos from the refurbishment, and a clean Massachusetts title in the seller's name.
The exterior was finished from the factory in Bright Red (2 B) and was repainted during current ownership following the completion of body repair. Photos from the work are provided in the gallery below. Equipment includes a power-operated white soft top, a driver's spotlight, front bumper rub strips, and interval wipers.
14″ steel wheels wear factory covers and are wrapped in 205/75 Hankook Mileage Plus II tires. The rear brakes were serviced and the brake booster and lines were replaced during the refurbishment.
The seating surfaces are upholstered in white leather with matching door panels and a contrasting black dashboard accented with wood trim. Black carpets line the floors, and options include front bucket seats, air conditioning, the Convenience Group, and an AM/FM stereo and spotlight.
A wood-trimmed three-spoke steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer and a 6 k-rpm tachometer, while amperage and oil pressure gauges are housed above the radio. The five-digit mechanical odometer indicates 82 k miles, around 500 of which were added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.
The Q-code 351 ci 4 V V 8 was factory rated at 246 horsepower. The engine was refreshed and a section of the passenger fender apron sheet metal was replaced during the refurbishment as captured in photos in the gallery.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a four-speed hurst manual transmission and a 3.25:1 rear end. Additional underside photos are also available in the photo gallery below.
The Deluxe Marti report indicates that the car was initially ordered by Owens Motors of Dedham, Massachusetts and lists factory options, dates, and production statistics.
Highly unusual Mercury Cougar and a very very nice car in person. Privately owned and titled.
