SHARP 1972 JEEP COMMANDO 4WD WITH 308 CID V8 PADDED ROLL BARS CLASSIC ICON! SHARP 1972 4WD JEEP COMMANDO – ICONIC 1970s CLASSIC

LOCATION:  Alparetta, GA…approximately 30 miles north of Atlanta.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE…the 1972 Jeep Commando is highly sought and seldom found.  Since so many were used primarily off-road, most examples were “used up” decades ago.

AMC famously acquired Jeep in 1970, and it was one of the wisest corporate decisions in AMC history.  For 1972, the front-end was re-designed to accommodate AMC's Inline-6 and V8 powerplants.  This example sports the highly desirable 304cid V8.

In sum, the 1972 Jeep Commando offered convertible fun in the sun as well as 4WD rugged off-road utility and cargo carrying capacity in a way that few other vehicles could match…especially with the V8 engine option.

LOCATION:  Alpharetta, GA...whichis approx. 30 miles north of Atlanta.

EXCELLENT INVESTMENT…the 1972 Jeep Commando has been gaining in stature among vintage Jeep collectors, and is now highly sought.  Now nearly a half-century old, few have survived.

VIN DECODING…the J2F87FVH12200 VIN# decodes as follows (according to the best internet resources we could find): J = Jeep Corp. 2 = 1972 Model Year F = Toledo Plant, 3-Speed Transmission, Left-hand Drive 87 = 1972 Jeep Commando 104” wheelbase w/4WD F = 1972 Full Cab Metal Commando V = Gross Vehicle Weight of 3900 lbs H = 304 cid V8 12200 = Production Serial/Sequence

EQUIPPED WITH ORIGINAL WARN-brand LOCKING HUBS…as explained on the original dash decal:  Both hubs should be fully in “FREE” position for normal use in both 2 and 4 wheel drive.  Both hubs ‘MUST” be manually locked for compression braking or pulling heavy loads in 4 wheel drive.

OPERATIONAL REPORT…this Commando is fun to drive and gets enthusiastic “thumbs up” greetings everywhere it goes.  You will appreciate the Power Steering…brakes are manual. It offers 2 or 4 Wheel drive.  If you are unfamiliar with how 4-wheel drive is engaged, we highly recommend that you research the proper method online.  The 2/4-wheel drive engagement stick has simple up/down operation (From Top: 4H, 2H, N, 4L).

Exterior Lights: Headlamps, directionals, side lamps, and running lights work fine…NO high-beams though.  There are NO brake lights…may need a new brake light switch.

Other Notes and “Quirks” (common to vintage cars of this age): Parking Brake held well during the photo-session…but I often also use a wheel block while photographing vintage cars. While starting – when the warning lights come on for their test mode – the AMP light illuminates as it should, but not the OIL light…perhaps a new bulb is needed.  Battery is new, but we recommend disconnecting if the Jeep is not driven for an extended period as current drain while sitting is common with cars of this age.  Heater fan works.  Wipers work, but washer does not. Clutch performed well in test drive - but requires some “travel” to engage – and from time to time may also chirp when engaged (particularly while turning). Vent control is stuck.  No lighter. We do not know the function of a loose chrome knob above the control panel on the left side of dash.  All gauges worked during the test drive…but are likely to all have become a bit inaccurate over the past 49 years! On the dash, the right directional indicator works, the left does not (exterior directionals illuminated front and back). Side mirrors shake a bit…perhaps they could be tightened, but this may just be part of the nature of this vehicle. Horn is inoperative. Sun visors have been removed because the roll bars interfered with their operation (too tight).  Jack (as shown) is included.  Because there is no radio installed, the antenna (included as shown) has been removed and the mounting hold has been capped.

IMPERFECTIONS…though many mechanical and cosmetic improvements have been made to the Jeep since acquired in 2014, NO attempt as been made to restore the Jeep to “as new” or “show” condition.  It has been intended to be used as a “fun driver” car.  To illustrate this, we have shown a complete section of “Imperfection” images from all around the car to supplement the other image sets (which also make imperfections evident).  Though the overall appearance of the Jeep is attractive – when viewed up-close - there are many paint and body flaws such as “dimples”, some peeling pain, chipped paint, corrosion, etc.

TOP NOTES…the top is quite solid and well-made.  However, removal/installation is a big chore.  Most owners make a long-term decision as to “on or off”.  There is some evidence of sealing.  Please examine the images fully.  We noted some subtle “dimpling” here and there “on top” and there is a little crack (shown in images at right) which could likely be easily repaired/sealed. We did not see any evidence of this crack inside the vehicle.

ODOMETER NOTE…the exact and correct mileage from the time this car was new in 1972 is not known with certainty due to the mechanical limitations of the original odometer's design.  Therefore, the indicated mileage of 09388 at the time of listing does not represent the actual mileage.

PAYMENT TERMS & INVITATION…a $500 non-refundable deposit via PayPal is required to hold the car for 5 business days, during which time the Bill of Sale must first be fully executed, and the balance paid/cleared in full via bank to bank wire transfer by the due date specified on the Bill of Sale. Serious buyers are invited to examine the car personally by appointment before making a purchase decision, but we are limiting appointments to those who fully intend to buy the car, and are coming only to confirm what we are showing in the 200+ images.

ABOUT ME…I am an avid Classic Car enthusiast.  After retiring from 30 years of Sales & Marketing in a Global 100 company, I began buying and selling Classic Cars and Collectibles as a collector and for friends and clients.  This classic belongs to a fellow classic car collector.

IMPORTANT DOCUMENT & CONDITION OF SALE REMARKS…Bill of Sale, and Georgia Registration will be provided to the Buyer.

The state of Georgia does not require titles for vehicles built before 1986.  Therefore, this Jeep Commando was not issued a title.  The Registration document is the legal document of ownership. Every state observes the DMV rules of all other states, therefore this vehicle may be insured, licensed, registered and driven in any state.  Whether it is titled depends upon the DMV title rules of your state.

This Vehicle is sold strictly on a final and “as-is” basis without any warranties expressed or implied. Even the very best restored classics will require additional maintenance and service - often without warning.  Therefore, please expect to continue - as the new owner and caretaker of this classic - to perform additional maintenance and repairs.  We hope that you are able to enjoy the Jeep without the need for an immediate repair - but understand that this indeed could be found necessary.  As seasoned collectors know, every time you start (or attempt to start) a collectible vehicle is a new experience...it could be a wonderful ride, or a new repair to undertake.  That is the nature of the hobby, and this classic should not be purchased if you are not prepared for this reality. We have presented the car accurately to the best of our ability, but oversights are possible…so we invite pre-purchase inspection for serious buyers.  All sales are final.

Because this car is only lightly driven locally - and is untested for long trips - we recommend that it be transported to its new locale. We remind you to be sure to review ALL the images and ALL the captions for this modern-day classic - in addition to this description – because they relate important information too!
