VW Splitscreen Van, 1964

This is a German built UK panel van with 3 previous owners.

This has just undergone a full bare metal restoration, I have loads of photos of this. It was done by a professional specialist company for me who shotblasted and took it back to bare metal before they undertook the metal work and paintwork. They then removed all the rust and filler and set about the process of building this back up with new panels and chassis sections as required, over £25000 just for this work. This took nearly 18 months as the UK weather had taken it toll on the underside over the years. The old chassis sections that were paper thin were removed and replaced with new  sections, rear cargo floor totally replaced with new inner and outer cills. Doors skins and bottom door sections , rear corners, front arches and front lower nose and inner section. All the usual sections that corrode and need fixing on a UK van have not been done to a very high standard. Its now all metal as it should be and not filler and old newspapers as some vans are. This is now a solid van that will last another 57 years.

Please contact me for more photos of the restoration. Its hard to believe the amount of work that has gone into this without seeing them. There is now no rust or filler on this van. Every panel was taken back to bare metal. I have added one of the many photos of the resto work showing the new chassis underside and some the metalwork.

The Front beam has been beadblasted, repaired and repainted. New torsion leaves have been fitted as most of the old ones were broken. The spindles have been rebuild with new bearings and link pins. The front drum brakes have been renewed with new shoes, backing plates and cylinders. All new Brake hoses and fittings. New wheel bearings. I've fitted a front antiroll bar just to make driving a little better.

Steering box has been refurbished by N2 engineering and new tie rod and drag links fitted along with new damper. New pitman arm bushes fitted and reamed for new pin.

All new cables for handbrakes, clutch, throttle. New throttle assy with roller bearings and return spring fitted to give a better throttle response.

The Gearbox has been fully overhauled and rebuilt to a Freeway Flyer to give a better cruising speed. The reduction boxes have also been refurbished and all new bearings fitted with new seals.

A VW Jim brake servo has been fitted so you can actually stop this with ease, such a massive improvement over the standard brakes.

New wiring harness fitted and speedo refurbished and reset to 0 when done. Now showing 112 miles which is all it's done since the rebuild. New bolts and seals all round. I fitted a hazard switch as a safety feature just in case. Its a VW aircooled, they all breakdown and some point. Fuel gauge converted to 12V

Rear brakes have been renewed with shoes, pipes and backing plates.

It now has a new 1641 engine fitted with engle 100 high lift cam, twin 34ICT webber carbs jetted for the engine, conversion to alternator for better charging. This engine has only covered 112 miles so far during a running in period and has just had its first oil change. A Fuel cut off valve is fitted in the engine bay and a battery isolator switch for safety.

It drives great now for a 57 year old van, cruises along nicely and brakes easily now it has the servo fitted.

New Fuel tank as the old one was split and beyond repair.

Vintage Speed exhaust, Heat Exchangers have been retained and refurbished. The heating works well for a splitscreen.

A gas fire extinguisher system is also fitted into the engine bay with an active light on dash.

New tyres were also fitted to the 15" standard wheels which were also bead blasted and painted.

The interior has been sound treated with dynomat and 3M thinsulate and then new interior panels fitted with vinyl in red and cream as seen with a fluted design. A full with rusty lee rock and roll bed has been fitted in the rear and I also have the bulkhead camper unit which has yet to be fitted as seen in the photos. This is Light Oak unit and can take a CR50 fridge unit if you fit one.

I have a folder fully of all the old paperwork as the previous owner has the van since 1996 including old MOT's etc. And I have a folder with every receipt of every part used and fitted including all the bills for the restoration. I dare not add up what I have spend on this van over the years, the wife would string me up

The colour of the van is VW Titian Red L555 on the bottom half and underneath and the top and inside is Beige Grey L572. The paint work is to a really high standard as you can see from the photos as you get reflections. They took a lot of time in the prep and paint as I wanted a top finish as this van I was going to keep for years. But a failing back and being 6ft4" tall its just not getting used and just sits inside my warehouse most of the time.

I'm not in a rush to sell and I may decide to keep it as I'm still in two minds about it.
