EXTERIOR

Freshly painted in the iconic Gulf combination of Powder Blue and Marigold the low slung, wedge shaped silhouetted of this stunning GT 40 recreation evokes an entire generation of motorsport pedigree.Using moulds taken directly from a genuine GT 40 this Tornado based body is about as close to an original car that is likely for use on the road sitting at just 41″ with its vast intakes and deeply rakes nose it looks every bit a race car with an optional Gurney bubble which allowing an extra inch to accommodate for a taller driver.

Having just completed an extensive 3 year rebuild, condition of the car is superb, with every detail meticulously hand painted before being altered to ensure panel fitment was above and beyond that of the original.

INTERIOR

Climbing into the cockpit of the GT 40 requires a few attempts to perfect, with its unique guillotine style doors and vast sills, which house fuel tanks on both side of the car, making entry a tight squeeze into the seats. Once situated in the cabin the focus and attention to detail in the space becomes clear, with a GT 40 style dash housing the SW gauges and clearly labelled flip switches all angled at the driver to maximise efficiency.

Unlike the original car this evocation does have a brand new air conditioning system to make up for the lack of ventilation in the Lexan windows, and some further sound insulation to make the car more bearable on roads. Removable door tops are another lovely feature of the interior, providing a Targa style driving experience to enjoy the sounds of immense V 8 mounted just inches behind the cabin.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Powering this incredible evocation is an equally impressive V 8, based on a Ford 302 block which has been bored to 5400 cc and blueprinted with upgrades including forged pistons, Edelbrock aluminium performance heads, a full MSD ignition system and 4 Twin-Weber carburettors for a full fat race car experience. The end result is an output of around 373 bhp, which is more than enough to make the lightweight space frame chassis and fibreglass body of the GT 40 feel more like a rocket that a road car.

Power is transferred via a 5-Speed manual gearbox and Quaife limited slip differential, with no electronic aids to disrupt the link between driver and machine. During the cars recent overhaul the engine was subject to a top end rebuild, with the gearbox and differential fully rebuilt in a stack of invoices totalling well in excess of £20 k.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

Complementing the classic colour scheme of the GT 40, the period knock-on alloys are finished in a vibrant orange with contrasting chrome rims. Wheels are 17″ to allow for a modern set of tyres, with Michelin Pilot Sports at the rear and Goodyear Eagles at the front.

Wheels are about all that actually remain from the car before the rebuild, with brand new independent suspension, Wilwood brakes and even a brand new tubular chassis fabricated during the cars extensive rebuild.

HISTORY FILE

First registered on 06/12/96 this stunning Tornado recreation has been a labour of love for the current owner, who purchased the car in good faith before discovering the tubular chassis had excessive corrosion and was unfit for purpose. An incredible 3 year restoration was undertaken to bring the car up to the owners discerning standards, with performance car specialists SMDG undertaking a nut and bolt rebuild of the vehicle, with just the block, exhaust and wheels retained from the car initially purchased.

Tornado supplied a brand new tubular chassis for the car, built to much higher standards than the original, before the whole car was rebuilt using brand new performance parts including the suspension, fuelling system, cooling system, brakes, interior and even a custom air conditioning system. Bodywork was meticulously hand painted in Gulf colours and adjusted to fit the new chassis perfectly. In total the build, including the purchase of the car, is said to owe the current owner in excess of £160 K

Present with the car is a photo book of the restoration, service invoices, Tornado Certificate of Conformity and Homologation and a V 5.
