Looking like it emerged from the set of TV's “Mad Men. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is proud to present this 1967 Mercedes-Benz 230SL Roadster. This was the 230SL's final model year and this example is just one of the very low production of 185 produced in 1967.
The car's Dark Green (DB-268) paint is in excellent overall condition. while it's trim is in very good order. The car's windows are clear and intact. The styling permits driver and passenger a nearly unobstructed view in any direction. The car's lights are in a similar good order. This Benz rolls in 195SR14 tires and in very good condition and they surround factory wheel covers that match the body color. The wheel covers are in excellent shape. All of the body panels are straight and solid; its bumpers are in very good order. The engine bay is in very tidy and the battery appears new.
Under the hood is a 2. 3L inline six-cylinder SOHC engine with mechanical Bosch multi-port fuel injection. linked to a four-speed manual transmission. The car also has front disc brakes. In the trunk. which is in great shape. is a full-sized spare tire. some spare parts and other items. Additional storage is available behind the bucket seats.
Inside. the Bamboo-colored (149) bucket seats are in excellent shape. with the brown carpet is in very good order. as is the correct cream headliner. The instrument panel. with its VDO gauges. is in near-excellent shape; the original two-spoke steering wheel is in very good order. with its white rim and crossbar. The inner door panels are in excellent condition. The car's mirror glass is in very good shape. as is the center console and the shift lever is in good shape. Completing the interior is the “ultimate” irony – a BMW AM/FM stereo with cassette deck but the original Becker radio is included.
The 230SL (known internally as the W113) debuted at the Geneva Auto Show in March 1963 and it replaced the 190 SL. Production of the 230 SL commenced in June 1963 and ended on 5 January 1967. Its chassis was based on the W111 sedan platform. with a reduced wheelbase by 11. 8 inches. recirculating ball steering (with optional power steering). double wishbone front suspension and an independent single-joint. low-pivot swing rear-axle with transverse compensator spring. The dual-circuit brake system had front disc brakes and power-assisted rear drum brakes. The 230 SL was offered with a four-speed manual transmission. or an optional. very responsive fluid-coupled (no torque converter) four-speed automatic transmission. which was popular for US models. From May 1966. the ZF S5-20 five-speed manual transmission was available as an additional option. which was particularly popular in Italy. Of the 19. 31 230SLs produced. less than a quarter of them were sold in the US.
The 2. 3L M127. II inline-six engine torque was based on Mercedes-Benz's venerable M180 inline-six with four main bearings and mechanical Bosch multi-port fuel injection. Mercedes-Benz made a number of modifications to boost its power. including increasing displacement from 2. 2 L. and using a completely new cylinder head with a higher compression ratio (9. 3 vs. 8. 7). enlarged valves and a modified camshaft. A fuel injection pump with six plungers instead of two was fitted. which allowed placing the nozzles in the cylinder head and "shooting" the fuel through the intake manifold and open valves directly into the combustion chambers. An optional oil-water heat exchanger was also available.
A brief chronology of the most notable changes made to the 230 SL:
10/1963: First 230SL with automatic transmission
09/1964: Spare tire well removed. tire mounted horizontally
11/1964: Optional tinted/thermal glass and new soft-top with steel bows (distinguished by missing chrome trim on the outer trailing edge)
04/1964: US models with radio Becker Europa TR instead of Europa TG
08/1965: Some harmonization with new W108/W109sedans. incl. new floor panels. combined brake and clutch fluid reservoir. trunk light and interior changes. US models with hazard lights
03/1966: Mounts for three-point seat belts added
05/1966: Optional ZFfive-speed manual transmission; rare and now very desirable
The W113 was the first sports car with a "safety body. based on Bela Barényi's extensive work on vehicle safety: It had a rigid passenger cell and designated crumple zones with impact-absorbing front and rear sections built into the vehicle structure. The interior was "rounded. with all hard corners and edges removed. as in the W111 sedan. The W113 was also the first Mercedes-Benz with radial tires.
Famous 230SL owners include: Charlton Heston. David Coulthard. Tony Curtis. John Lennon. John Travolta. Kate Moss. Nico Rosberg. Peter Ustinov. Sophia Loren. Stirling Moss and Colin Powell.
