1987 Mercedes Benz 560SL Convertible Coupe MB 560 SL Both Tops!! for sale
Current customer rating:
Up for sale is this exceptional 1987 Mercedes Benz 560 SL. This vehicle is as nice as the pictures. so be sure to let your browser upload all the pictures I have enlarged.
First off. the vehicle does has 192. 00 miles on it. but it had a minor engine overhaul ($2300. 00) on the top end about 12. 00 miles ago. so it runs great.
The interior is very nice. with a new cloth top installed . and new carpets throughout. There is a new JVC CD/AM/FM player with Bluetooth capability.
The tires are recent with about 2000 miles on them.
This car was also newly painted about 2000 miles ago .
I am selling this because I have a 1974 MB 450 SL that I drive and am restoring. This 560 SL is sitting in the driveway most of the time.
The items that need attention are minor. They are: Seat rails need greasing as its kinda hard to adjust the seats back and forth. Also. the drivers seat has worn away area in the lower back rest from years of rubbing against it. The anti-lock brake light goes on. so I am not sure this means the that sensor need replacing or not. but the car stops as normal. Padded dash has some cracks (Padded Dash molded tops runs $120. 00 on Ebay).
Other than that. this is one nice (and powerful) automobile.
Because of the Jetronic Fuel Injection and Lambda Control System. this roadster actually gets good gas mileage. better than my 1974 450 SL.
For a history on the SL series. and the 560 specifically. see below.
The price is fair. so I do not see a need to sell it for a lot less. I think you will agree by looking at the pics. that this vehicle is not only worth the price. but will give you full enjoyment in the years to come.

History of the 560 SL
The
Mercedes-Benz
W 107
automobiles
were produced from 1971 through 1989. being the longest single series ever produced by the firm. They were sold under the SL (R 107) and SLC (C 107) model names. The R 107 took the chassis components of the mid size
Mercedes-Benz W 114
model and mated them to the larger engines from the
S-Class . The W 107 chassis is also referred to as "R 107" for "Reihe" (series). The series comprised SL and SLC models. The SL variant was a 2-seat convertible/roadster with standard soft top and hardtop.
Some 237. 00 107 chassis SL's were built. About two thirds were sold in the US. These 107 cars are larger. heavier and more costly than the previous generation W 113 SL cars. Starting in 1980. US cars were equipped with lambda control. which varied the air/fuel mixture based on feedback from an oxygen sensor.
Following the discontinuation of the SLC in September. 1981. the 107 series continued initially as the 280. 380 and 500 SL.
At this time. the V 8 engines were re-tuned for greater efficiency. lost a few hp and consumed less fuel. helped by substantially numerically shorter axle ratios . From September. 1985 the 280 SL was replaced by a new 300 SL. and the 380 SL by a 420 SL the 500 SL continued and a 560 SL was introduced for certain extra-European markets. most notably the USA.
Also in 1985. the Bosch KE Jetronic was fitted. The KE Jetronic system varied from the earlier. all mechanical system by the introduction of a more modern engine management "computer". which controlled idle speed. fuel rate. and air/fuel mixture.
The most spectacular addition to the engine range was a 5. 6-liter
V 8
with 272 hp. which was obtained by giving the 5-liter a longer stroke. For the domestic German market. the 5. 6 was not used in the SL. however. but only in the S-Class
sedans
and
coupes
. The 560 SL was only exported to the USA. Australia and Japan. but as a detuned version with a
catalytic converter
and only 230 hp because of the emissions regulations in these countries .
Despite the larger 5. 6 liter engine of the 560 SL. the 500 SL is recorded as being the fastest production 107 produced (mostly because of the lack of emission restraints. but also late 500 SLs were more powerful than the 560 SL. ) The 500 SL was published by Mercedes-Benz as having 0-60 mph times of 7. 4 seconds for a top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph). Torque for the 500 SL is 296 lb·ft (401 N·m) at 3200 rpm and for the 560 SL 287 lb·ft (389 N·m) at 3500 rpm. The 500 SL was not available in the U. S.
or Australian markets through Mercedes Benz dealers.
The final R 107 SL was built on August 4. 1989. This eighteen-year run makes the 107 series the longest running series produced by Daimler-Benz.
The last 107 made. a 1989 500 SL painted Astral Silver. resides in the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart. Germany.
The R 107 series today is prized by classic car collectors.

Conclusion
Today many R 107 cars survive. largely due to the quality of the cars when they were built. A R 107 is an easy to own classic that will give years of reliable operation as long as the car in question has been properly maintained.
The future for the R 107 series looks bright as well.
Well maintained R 107 cars that a few years ago could be bought for as little as $4. 00-$6000 are now double that amount.
It also looks as if the classic car community has started to rediscover the R 107 cars with many showing up at various car auctions and the best one commanding quite a lot of money. especially in the American market. One reason for this according to Andy Reid of Classic Motorsports magazineis that the R 107 "was a car designed for the American consumer.
As a measure of its success. the model was constructed with no major styling changes for almost 20 years. making the cars ingrained in the American mind as the measure of success. elegance and class.
An added advantage to owning a R 107 car over roadsters from other manufacturers is Mercedes Benz Classic Center parts network.
Virtually every single part for the R 107 cars is available new from the manufacturer.
In addition. the R 107 can be repaired at any Mercedes Benz dealer or independent mechanic. making the proposition of ownership of a classic all that much easier.
The 107 SL series thus set a record for
Mercedes-Benz
that is unlikely to be broken: no other Mercedes-Benz model series was produced for such a long period.
