1961 Ala Romeo Sprint Speciale

1961 Alfa Romeo 1300 Sprint Speciale.  Launched in 1957. the Giulietta Sprint Speciale was a stunning design clearly derived from the otherworldly Berlina Aerodinamica Tecnica. or B. A. T. . show cars created by Carrozzeria Bertone in the mid-1950s. Those aerodynamic studies led to what seemed a perfect solution to a competition version of the Bertone-bodied Giulietta Sprint Veloce. However. the Sprint Speciale proved to be a bit heavy for the task and instead became a stylish road car. adding more than a bit of grand touring flash to the entry-level Alfa Romeo line. One thousand. three hundred. and sixty-six Giulietta SS cars would be built by 1963. when the model was superseded by the larger-engined Giulia SS.
This is a 1961 Sprint Speciale Serial #177254. Early history on the car is unknown.  The Sprint Speciale was sold in 2001 to a collector/racer in Italy. from whom the current owner purchased it this year and brought it to the United States.
It is a treat for the eyes. Finished in a beautiful new white paint with an orange racing stripe. the notoriously complex body curves align perfectly with smooth transitions from fender-to-door-to-fender. confirmed by a glance down the sides. which reveals almost perfect reflections front to rear. The chrome and polished alloy trim is brilliant. Inside. there is a single black racing seat . the instrument panel. and roll bar.
Interest in these remarkable cars for the road has grown exponentially in recent years. It's not surprising. as their combination of unique style. limited production. and exhilarating Alfa Romeo performance are hard to beat. This race prepared Giulietta Sprint Speciale adds to that a level of quality that practically ensures success in competition.
The previous owner. who shall be called RM. did a complete restoration with a focus on performance  to have the SS more competitive in European races. Alfa Romeo has a very remarkable history. not only because of its cars. but maybe just as much because of the people who have been operating behind the scenes throughout the many years. The Alfa ‘virus' often took possession of engineers. designers. managers and drivers who got famous doing their job at ‘Il Biscione'. Franco Angelini was one of them. This Roman technician died last summer at the age of 79 and was often called ‘Il Mago' by Alfisti. or ‘The Magician'. Making cars faster and better was his specialty. and the brand Alfa Romeo played a vital role in this story of this SS.
When RM bought the car in 2001. he retained “The Magician” to do a complete renovation of the SS spending in excess of 50. 00 euro. This SS has 122 horsepower instead of the standard 90. The engine was completely tuned by one of the most famous engine tuning for Alfas and includes modified pistons. piston rods. cylinder head. valves. distribution shaft. and copper clutch. Other modifications and were made at the oil radiator. steering wheel box. and brakes. The car has made much lighter thanks to the use of plexiglass. light but resistant roll bars and aluminum. In addition the SS windshield is laminated and stratified.

This SS has a weight savings of 40 kilos less than stock allowing this car enhanced performance. All the modifications that were made in the car were done for three purposes: more power. less weight and increased safety.
This SS has raced in the FIA Class HGTS4 and participated into the championship of the Giulietta Trophy winning 3 races in the category Gran Turismo. It also participated in other competitions outside of Italy.
EPA and DOT release are included as well as the original engine block.
