With much regret I've decided to sell my 1964 13 window deluxe camper it will be sorely missed as it has taken me and the family to loads of shows and on a fair few summer holidays over the years it was even my wedding car! Since the van has been in the uk it has always been garaged and has only ever been used in the summer months. it's been maintained to the highest standard and whatever it's needed it's had at any cost! It has passed every mot with no advisories as its like new underneath and there's no black under seal to hide any naughty's.

I've owned the van since 2006 im the only UK keeper and the logbook shows its a 1900 cc diesel. the van is tax exempt and MOT'd till April 2014
The van has been restored underneath with new panels as required (see below) and looks like new. Above ground sympathetic repairs have been done to keep it looking un-restored. The upper body rust is surface only and has not deteriorated since ive owned it in the past 6 years.

The camper is a 1964 us import deluxe microbus (nicknamed the samba by many) which was the highest spec. most expensive vw van at the time. the van is even rarer than a normal “samba” models as it was a factory special order van with option code M 130 to “delete sunroof and panoramic windows” this and the fact the big tailgate split vans were only built 64-67 this makes the 13 window deluxe micro bus a rare bus production numbers wise!

Even before I started looking for a split screen camper I knew I didnt want a shiny characterless one that looked the same as all the rest I wanted something that stood out from the crowd with genuine patina that had stories to tell about its long and colourful life but that didn't mean I wanted to be welding every mot so the body had to be super solid underneath so a full restoration was carried out underneath.

I've personally owned aircooled vw vans since the late 1990's so I knew after all these years exactly what I wanted that was a van that looked old but had a modern engine brakes and suspension (doesn't everyone!) And that I could get in and drive 1000's of miles a year without having to mess about with every weekend adjusting engine settings and brakes etc so to get a low maintenance van pretty much every mechanical part has been replaced or upgraded a full proper nut and bolt restoration. Maybe why the van has been featured in both the split screen van club magazine and volks world camper and bus magazine plus winning best custom split at camper jam 2009

The camper has been professionally converted to run a VW Golf 1. 9 TDI engine which has been fitted with cruise control which take the stress out of long motorway journeys. The engine has been mildly tuned with a de-cat. EGR delete. free flow air filter and a stainless steel silencer so the van is very nippy and at around 100 bhp (+ bags of low revs torque) and with the up-rated and rebuilt freeway flyer 091 2 litre bay gearbox it will easily keep up with modern traffic but is much smoother to drive in traffic than a modified aircooled van! The van cruises at 65-70 mph without even trying and it easily returns 40+mpg on a run (approx double what a 100 bhp aircooled van will do) and will go back round to needle stop on speedo if your really in a rush (on private roads obviously -)

With all that extra power the brakes have been upgraded to 280 mm vented and drilled disks up front with 280 mm drilled disks to the rear with a dual circuit master cylinder and servo to make the brake pedal nice and light to push.

The suspension has been upgraded to a cb performance 2” narrowed beam up front with KYB gas shocks and at the rear end the van has been upgraded to a volksheaven type 2 IRS kit again complemented with KYB up-rated gas shocks and then the whole van has been lowered around 6”/150 mm from standard

To help keep to van running true at the new higher speeds the steering has been upgraded to a power assisted direct acting rack and pinion steering setup this makes the van much more responsive to drive and takes out the usual steering box and centre pin free play. it Is light to park just like a modern car and even with the smaller vintage 1960's wooden nardi steering wheel fitted I can park with 1 hand.

no doubt by now you are bored of reading so here is a brief rundown on the main juicy bits:

Rare 1964 13 window deluxe microbus camper still with all deluxe trim parts still fitted. fully restored underbody and engine bay fully 2 k repainted in original factory colour turkis grun with photos for buyer to prove what work has been done. I can fully assure you the are no scary repairs covered in bondo and shiny paint done by chuck and hank to rot back through by next spring!!!!!

Eberspacher D 1 LCC diesel night heater

240 v mains hookup with rcd and zig unit for caravan sites

Twin 86 ah leisure batteries with split charger for power when wild camping

Large 850 watt inverter ideal for charging phones. running computers dvd players and Tvs (will even run power tools its so big!)

Amplifed JBL 10” speakers for iphone. Ipod tablet connectivity (3. 5 mm jack input)

So there you have it a quick run down of the spec. the vans honest with no fresh paint and it is exactly as ive described it. A good friend once said to me “better honest rust than dishonest paint” bear this in mind with shiny vans! the van is solid and has nothing to hide every scratch and mark tells a story. In the last 6 years I've been all over the country with no problems whatsoever it's been a hoot to own and drive attracts so much attention whether driving around town show boating or at vw shows/festivals

Im genuinely only selling as I have another big long term project nearing completion plus 4 other cars and this one does the least mileage every year so if it doesn't sell for what I want I will just keep it.

All repairs have been done with the van rolled over on a car tillter and have been welded with a proper mig (not a 100 amp hobby welder) to factory standard.

Chassis rails/floor pans and all repairs have repainted in por 15 arches. cargo and cab floor have been gravitexed and the whole lot was then painted in solvent based 2 k turkis grun paint (original colour) as was the engine bay

The body has been treated to a full length 5 bow custom made roof rack with folding side which allow the van to fit in a standard height single garage

Creative engineering front safari popout windows has been fitted

Extra rear pop outs were sourced for the rear most “deluxe only” back side windows so you now have all 8 side windows as pop outs!!!! All 8 have new body to frame seals

All locks are original and work from a single key which is very rare! there are 2 x keys included with the van

ENGINE & GEARBOX

VW 1. 9 TDI engine (1 Z engine code) mildy tuned with free flow air filter & exhaust fitted. decatted and stainless backbox. gr valve deleted

Fully wired as per vw specs giving full obd 2 diagnostics to work with diagnostic scanners/vagcom etc custom road speed sensor added and ecu enabled to give full working cruise control. The engine is mounted on VW hydro engine mounts with a custom cradle to give a smooth idle and reduce interior noise at higher engine speeds. the engines vitals are monitored by 3 x VDO gauges (water temp/oil temp/oil pressure) mounted in the over head air scoop along with a 5” monster tach rev counter and shift light. the engine is cooled by 2 x alloy cored VW radiators in a belly pan scoop ensuring the engine runs nice and cool often a problem with poorly engineered conversions.

The engine runs a stock 228 mm tdi solid flywheel and standard clutch meaning if needed it would be easy to find replacement parts anywhere in the world

The gearbox is a late 2. 0 bay (the one everyone wants with the 4. 57 diff) 091 type (cp code) 6 rib freeway flyer gearbox which has been reconditioned around 3 years since with new bearings as required. full set of syncro's new 3 rd/4 th gear hub. new shifter hockey stick and full seal set. plus new weedle 0. 70:1 4 th overdrive gear and HA projekt uprated tdi input shaft. the case is painted black with stainless fixings. Fitted with a empi quick shift kit to gear lever. The gearbox is mounted on void bushes to again reduce engine noise. A 1. 7 kw reduction gear starter motor has been fitted to easily start the engine

Driveshafts are 100 mm T 2 CV joints both ends rebuilt with new GKN lobro cv boots

STEERING
Direct acting power assisted steering (does away with steering box and all linkages under van to completely eliminate free play) custom hydraulic hoses and PSA electro hydraulic pas pump (even with small 1960's nardi wood rim steering you can still park with 1 hand) flipped bay ball joints in spindles to reduce bump steer

SUSPENSION
CB Performance adjustable ride height narrowed front beam fitted with KYB gas shocks. late bay front hubs rebuilt with new bearings and seals and bay spindle lock nuts.

Volksheaven IRS Rear suspension kit with genuine 68 spring plates. brand new genuine A-Arms. late bay rear hubs rebuilt with Timken/SKF brand european top quality bearings and seals. KYB gas shocks

BRAKES & WHEELS
280 mm vented/drilled front disk conversion on late bay front hubs with 15 mm hub centric studded Porsche wheel adaptors

280 mm solid drilled rear disk conversion on late bay hubs with 35 mm hub centric studded Porsche wheel adaptors
