1963 VW Split Screen Camper Van – RHD – 12V - Show Winning Interior - Nut & Bolt Restoration.

Perhaps one of the best Split Screen Vans in existence this beauty now only needs a loving new owner to turn the key and drive away! The van has been restored to such a meticulous standard it is hard to know where to begin in terms of a description.

History

Originally supplied to Thailand from new the van is of course RHD and has spent the majority of its life in a lovely warm climate. which significantly attributes to its overall standard prior to restoration.

Fully restored in 2009 with receipts mounting to £10. 00

Bodywork & Paint

The bodywork is exceptional and of course the van has no rust whatsoever. Re-sprayed in a beautiful mellow red over Monaco white the paintwork is very good and straight all over.

Every single panel is thick and full of nothing but good solid metal and paint! No heaps of filler underneath shiny paint! The front floor pans are original and are in almost ‘as new' condition as can be seen by the photographs.

Underside

The underside of the van is to an equal standard as the top half and I would encourage anyone to have a good look underneath to see for them self the condition to which the van has been maintained/restored. Every single belly pan is original and intact! Regularly wax oyled to maintain immaculate condition.

The van sits at stock height and has not been tampered with or lowered. The main reason for this was to retain originality whilst also keeping the van practical and comfortable to drive/use.

Windows

Almost every original feature of the van from new has been retained including the front Safari Pop Out Windows which are in exceptional condition especially considering the fact that they are 50 years old! This is almost unheard of with Split Screens as the original frames had usually rotten away many years ago.

All side pop out windows are in equally good condition and all work as they should and do not leak!

Engine

1600 Recon Engine – Starts with the turn of the key without fail in any given condition and has covered less than 2000 miles since installment. Single port of course (the original and superior setup). Running off an original VW carburetor sweetly and ticking over happily at very low revs. Never stalls at any junctions and pulls peacefully throughout every gear.

Gearbox

Reconditioned Beetle 1300 Gearbox works perfectly selecting every gear easily and without fail every time. No stirring a bowl of washing up liquid to find first or reverse!

Brakes

CSP front disc brake conversion. Brakes smoothly and effectively. Cost - £1700

Steering

Creative Engineering Steering Rack Conversion. Arguably the best thing you could ever do to a Split Screen as the original steering was infamously abysmal! The cost of this exercise is over £1000 alone.

Interior

Now onto what is in my opinion the icing on the cake with this van. This is by a long margin the finest interior I have ever seen on a Split Screen in my entire life. The interior has been passionately custom built to a show-winning standard! It really has to be seen to be appreciated fully!

Both Cargo doors open to create an awning which is very simple and fast to setup and incredibly effective.   There are numerous cupboards and storage holes throughout the inside as well as a custom fabricated metal cabinet to store the gas bottle in.

A special table has been designed to house the period twin gas hob cooker. which comes with the van. Cleverly designed to sit in the awning outside of the van to reduce the risk of fire whilst cooking and to keep any odours out in the open as opposed to inside the van itself.

Folding table in the centre can cleverly be folded out into a double bed frame onto where two matching cushions sit to create the double bed. This will sleep two comfortably.

Headlining has all been replaced to an exceptional standard also.

A truly outstanding interior in all departments that has won several awards within the SSVC for its excellence.

Electrics

Completely converted to 12V electrics. Every single wire replaced with new and kept very simple and tidy. Dual battery cut off in engine bay compartment and two fire extinguishers in the van (One in front and one in rear). Leisure battery with 12V inverter.   Rev counter and oil temperature gauge fitted in dash along with a 12V socket and cigarette lighter. Fitted neatly into a period steal cutaway fabricated to perfection.

Extras

Original and now obsolete ‘Ice Pick' Door handles are a lovely and rare feature very sought after in the VW world. All chrome in very good condition with no pitting!

Deluxe Samba Belt Trim fitted all round recently including the corner bumper sections.

Creative Engineering roof racks front and rear. The one and only option for roof racks in my opinion! Cost - £1000

Custom built side ladder which can be mounted on to the guttering to secure your weight comfortably to enable climbing up onto the roof.

Conclusion

With popularity and prices of Split Screens ever increasing this is a perfect investment opportunity and also an opportunity to have a lot of fun over the summer! They don't come better than this!

Comes with 12 months MOT and is Road Tax Fee Exempt.
