1934 Rolls-ROyce 20/25 Park Ward for sale
Current customer rating:
A particularly interesting project. being a very attractive. nicely-proportioned sports saloon. with rear-mounted spare wheel and some unusual features. It is apparent that the car was originally owned by a motoring enthusiast. as it was ordered with various extras. specified on the sales records. including ‘Hartford Telecontrol' shock absorbers. a ‘battery water gauge'. and various others. represented by an impressive array of instrumentation and switching on the dashboard! Renovation needed. but well worthwhile in the light of the individuality of the car.
Chassis No. GXB 19.
Reg No. AXK 100.
£22. 00.
Ordered by Alexander Grant Legge of Kilconquhar House. Bridgnorth.
Alexander was the 7 th child of the Reverend & Mrs A. Legge who had moved to Shropshire from Scotland.
Alexander had qualified as a dental surgeon & two of his brothers Sydney & David James Melville had become Doctors.
After WWI in which the brothers had served. they all settled in the Shifnal area of Shropshire and raised the necessary funds to build the Shifnal Cottage Hospital.
By 1951 GXB 19 is shown as being at Papworth Industries in Cambridgeshire – which was founded in 1917 as a community for TB patients by Dr (later Sir) P. Varrier-Jones.
This enterprise became a financial success and under the tradename “Pendragon” which today produces high quality leather goods. including travelling cases. trunks. attache cases etc.
The firm has the distinction of having held five Royal Warrants – 1924-1941 King George V. 1931 Prince of Wales. 1940-1947 Queen Elizabeth & 1952 -2000 The Queen Mother. Subsequent owners of GXB 19 included two lawyers - John Felix Craddock Swayne & a D. Wild plus a geologist with the unusual surname of Pegrum – this is derived from the word pilgrim – meaning someone who had been on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land or perhaps to Canterbury to visit the resting place of St. Thomas a Beckett.
