1928 Packard Custom Built Boattail Speedster!

PRICE REDUCED!

Thank you for taking the time to look at the information on my custom built Packard. It was originally a 1928 Packard 526 Sedan.

It is a complete nut and bolt restoration. All work. except the engine rebuilding. including the custom built steel body and paint was done in my shop. It has been finished (are they ever finished?) for about one year and has about 700 miles on it since. I also put about 700 miles on it when it was under construction.

I was originally going to make a copy of the Jesse Vincent Speedster. but found it had already been done so I went with my own design.

It was designed from the start to be a great driver in the original style to give me the experience of driving a great car from that era. anytime I wanted without reliability issues.

The overall design I saw as something a young man might build. or have built. out of a fairly new wrecked Packard he received from a rich relative.

The chassis is basically a stock 1928 526 rebuilt with a few modifications: 1930 Packard rear shocks. friction front shocks. new shorter main leaves in the springs. and a 1930 Packard steering box. The engine is a 1930 320 cu in 8. completely re-built. with the 1930 4 speed transmission. The engine has been moved back in the frame 18” and lowered 2”. and the steering. brake system (original mechanical). seating. etc. was moved rearward as required to achieve the proper proportions for a speedster.

The radiator was moved rearward and down approx. 2” each to mount behind the front cross member. The grill shell was sectioned 2” and re-chromed. The hood was lengthened approx 14”. The firewall and body was hand made of steel in my shop to my design and painted a 1930s Packard Blue. so dark people think it is black.

The interior consists of an original 1930 Packard wheel with the hand throttle and light switch operational as designed. The gauge cluster panel is a 1933/4 Packard with the original spark advance and choke levers. The seats are done in distressed leather built on custom frames for complete adjustability for comfort. The floor boards are original Packard wood.

All the mechanical systems and components are pre 1930 Packard to give the experience of driving a premium vintage Packard Roadster when they were not just wonderful old classic cars. but the Kings of the Road! And the experience is GREAT! It is a wonderful driving car!

The electrics were upgraded for reliability and easy servicing. The system is now 12 volt. The engine uses a Petronics electronic ignition for reliability. The original generator was removed and a modern alternator was adapted to the original chain drive position. The P-100 Lucas headlights were converted to 12 volt as were the taillights. Modern electric (vintage styled) gauges keep an eye on the engine. speed. and time (clock). An example of the attention to detail is that the back-up light not only works. but only when it's needed when the lights are on.

Additional information on the build can be found on packardinfo. com. Look in the Forum section under Project Blogs and search Rons '28 Packard Speedster Project.

There was also a nice video done of the car at the 2012 Detroit Autorama Basement show where the car received a Builders Pick Award by restoration expert Joshua Shaw and the Best Engineered Award from the Extreme show. Google 1928 Packard Speedster and look for the 2012 Autorama article. it should be the first one.  There are also some other photos and info in other articles there.

I built this car for myself to keep forever. Unfortunately situations beyond my control have me considering this sale.
