Here you have it folks. the ultimate Mercury for 1968. The Mercury Cougar GT-E!!!

This is the only car in the Ford line up that came from the factory with the formidable 427 side-oiler. There were 394 GT-E's produced in 1968. 357 had the 427. This particular car is in the GT-E registry. and has been personally inspected by the registrar. In addition to the GT-E package. this car features a 3. 50 Traction-Loc axle. the XR-7 package and is 1 of 18 produced in Lime-Frost.

We purchased this car 7 years ago and then researched the car's history. I have spoken to everyone that owned the car and have their contact information. The original owners manual (with the purchaser's information on the inside of the front cover) and service manual have been located and come with the car.

During the process of documenting the drive train. the engine compartment was painted and detailed for show. An AMK bolt kit. correct wire harnesses. upper and lower radiator hoses and red stripe Autolite heater core hoses were installed. I also had the exhaust manifolds hot jet coated to retain the correct finish. To complete the project a new exhaust system was installed. including a new H-pipe from Tony Branda.

Examination confirms that the car is numbers matching. Photographs of all relavant castings and vin stamps are available upon request.

The tag reads PGB W C11353. It is stamped with 8F556378. has the correct Servo Cover with the H on it. and has the correct aluminum tail shaft.

Rear End:

It has the correct housing and carrier. The tag is in place and reads WFD-A 6L50. 8AD945 and date 7L7.

The car does not have its original carburetor. fan/clutch. distributor. fuel pump. or smog equipment. The oil pan on the motor is not correct. however there is a correct oil pan included with the car.   I do  have a correct Holley Carburator that was restored to concourse condition by Joe Bunetic. and a correct original fan. They are not included with the car but are available for sale to the winning bidder at fair market value if so desired.

This car shows very well and draws attention everywhere it goes. It was cosmetically restored in 1989 and 1990.   It has been garage stored and has been driven occasionally since then.   The paint on the car does show some signs of age. However. it was just detailed for show season and it looks very nice. All the GT-E trim is present except for the exhaust tips and is in good shape. The trim is typical of a 45 year old car and shows some wear. The interior is very nice. The front seats have been redone in vinyl but show very well. The rear seat is original and shows the typical uneven color that you see on 45 year old seats. Both the floor and overhead consoles are in great shape as are the door panels and headliner. The AM 8-Track is in the car and the radio works. but the 8 track is not functioning.

I am not a mechanic or a body man.   That being said. the car is typical of a west coast car.   We have been through the car top to bottom and can find no signs of rust or bondo.   The torque boxes and rockers are great as are the quarter panels. The underside of the car is driver quality.   Mechanically the car seems sound.   It runs strong and smooth.   I have driven it on round trips of 200 miles plus without issue more than once.  The styled steel wheels are original and are very nice.   The tires are good. with no cracking or flat spots and have plenty of tread left on them.

This is a very rare car and the reserve is commensurate with the value of the car. Fully restored the car is worth north of $125. 00. 00. Very few of them still exist and most are either total basket cases / rust buckets or are trailer only cars. This one is in the sweet spot. It is nice enough that you can take it to a show on the weekend and be super proud. but is not so perfect that you are afraid to drive it.

On Jun-25-13 at 21:01:58 PDT. seller added the following information:

In building my listing I forgot to include a couple of pictures.   In the interest of full disclosure I am including pictures of them now.   The first two are pictures of the right quarter panel where the vinyl top meets the quater panel. This is not rust as best I can tell.   It is not at all soft and is my belief that it was a flaw in the body work.

The second two pictures are of the hood scoop.   I am not sure what caused it but there is some bubbling in the paint.   It looks almost like the prep work was flawed before paint.   It is limited to the hood scoop not the rest of the hood.   I apologize for the poor lighting but its raining cats and dogs and I could not get it out in better light to take more pictures.

Thanks for watching and bidding

Chris
