1967 VW Split Screen Camper Van

An outstanding example of the very sought after ‘SO42' model.

Subject to thousands spent bringing it up to its current standard. For those who are unfamiliar with the SO42 Model I have written some information about it below.

The SO comes from sonderausfuhrungen which means 'special model' and was how VW designated special models. For example SO1 was a westfalia's mobile shop. SO3 a police car or SO30 an ambulance. All these models where based on VW's Buses.

SO42 was ones of the last westfalia's camper conversions on a Split (T1) bus basis. before was SO22. SO23. SO33. SO34. SO35. SO44 and SO45 where contemporary to SO42 which was available between 1965 and 1967. 1967 was the last year of the Split(window). then came the Baywindow (T2).

This particular example is in superb original condition throughout and has clearly been well looked after throughout its life. Unlike many other vans this has not been messed around with and a high majority of its original features have been nicely retained.

The van sits at stock height on its original suspension setup so will serve its original purpose being able to tackle pretty much any terrain unlike any of the lowered Splitties which struggle to get in and out of a festival site!

Bodywork

The van has been professionally re-sprayed in original Velvet Green / White to a very high standard. All rubber seals have been replaced and any subsequent parts have been of the highest possible standard.

As you can imagine the bodywork is in lovely condition and very straight down the long side panels and roof.

Mechanical

The van has had a professionally hand built new engine fitted in 2010 which has covered approximately 22. 00 miles since installation (1600cc). This has been regularly serviced / maintained by the previous owner during that time.

Original Gearbox selects every gear and does not slip out of any gears.

One of the best attributes of this bus is the original SO42 camping style interior. which is in beautiful condition throughout. I cannot stress how many interiors have been destroyed or modified over the years but the condition of this one is truly exquisite.

All the vinyl seat coverings are intact with no rips/tears.

The Pop-top canvas and mechanism are in immaculate condition and work perfectly

Fridge & Tap in good condition

A Heater has been neatly and professionally fitted underneath the bed with the thermostat controls mounted neatly on the side. This comes complete with a gas bottle. Ideal for camping on cold winter nights.

The ¾ Width fold down bed will sleep two comfortably and there is also a front hammock. which fits across the front cab that will happily sleep another (Young one preferably).

This van has one of the best-kept interiors I have ever seen and has to be viewed in the flesh to be truly appreciated.

Electrics

12V Electrics Throughout. Everything works as it should and there are no electrical faults.

Leisure Battery has been fitted with a split charge relay so that the alternator will charge both batteries at the same time.

Electric hookup has also been fitted neatly in the engine bay for camping purposes.

Underneath

The underside of the van is in superb condition with no rust / rot issues whatsoever. I am happy for anyone to look at the van on the ramps to prove its condition inside and out.

The underside has been regularly wax oiled and cleaned to prevent rust hence its condition at present.

In conclusion I find it difficult to fault this van as it is in superb condition and only needs a caring new owner to turn the key and drive away.   Split Screens are continuing to rise in value and becoming evermore popular so it goes without saying that this bus is a fantastic investment opportunity for someone. The bus will come with 12 months MOT and 12 months road tax. which of course is free being road tax fee exempt.
