1925 STUDEBAKER DUPLEX PHAETON RESTORED AND BEAUTIFUL!

 The Duplex Phaeton is a fascinating body style. inspired by the California tops of the early 1920's.   Studebaker made a factory delivered car with the look of a phaeton. but the convenience of a hardtop and convenient. pull-down isinglass windows. which are much nicer than the typical sidecurtains of the era.   As you'll see in the photos. the top is fixed. this is not a convertible.   It's a really cool design! 

 The chassis has a roomy 113 inch wheelbase. and a peppy 242 cubic inch six cylinder engine. and a 3 speed manual transmission. The axle ratio is 4. 18 to 1.   It abounds with interesting features. including a fully instrumeted dashboard. Winged Moto-Meter temp guage. adjustable windshield. Cat-eye shifter knob. "Lockout" key for the transmission. which allows you to lock the transmission and keep the car from being driven. there's no ignition key! . span >  working vacuum tank. correct woodgrained doorsills. sunvisor. drum headlamps with "quilt" pattern lenses. single rearmounted spare. tool roll. and a unique charcoal heated footwarmer!

 This car was restored by Mr. David Neitzel. a very knowledgeable and prolific Studebaker Collector.   Photos and receipts document the frame-off restoration. which included engine rebuild. real leather seats. correct and easily to operate duplex window "shades"  tires. brakes. etc.   It was thoroughly restored by a man who knew what to do because of his vast experience with Studebakers of that vintage. I will post some photos of the receipts and the restoration photos on my website.   The car was purchased  as a complete. fundamentally sound car by Mr. Neitzel in 1993. span >  and completed in time for the 2000 Studebaker national meet. where it made a 362 point second place trophy in it's division. out of a possible 400 points! It's a very nice restoration. but it's not a top show winner. span >  the paint is nice but not perfect. and there are some very minor things that keep it from being a Pebble Beach concours contender! It was shown on the cover of the 2000 "Turning wheels"  international meet issue of the Studebaker club.  

 The color choice is a cheerful one. span >  and there is documentation in the file that showed Studebaker would do special paint colors during this era.   They were more customer-oriented than "any color as long as it's black" Henry Ford!  It is very authentic. down to the finish of the dashboard. the doorsills. the pull-down windows. and the padded hardtop.

 Operationally. this car is terrific!  It runs great. starts right up on the vacuum tank. holds great oil pressure. and runs cool. The tires are in excellent shape. and so are the brakes.   The horn and lights work. and so do the gauges except for the hydro-static fuel guage. It's obvious that a premium was placed on making this car work properly.   The wood spoke wheels were done at restoration. and they're in good shape - solid and tight. no "clicking"  or shrinking. The undercarriage is still nice and clean. reflecting it's status as a frame-off restoration.

This is a lovely car. and it's truly ready to enjoy now on AACA or Studebaker club tours and shows. or
