VW VR6 With Unique History in NSW

This car is quite unique. It was imported by VW especially for display at Melbourne and Sydney motor shows in 1995. It was then retained for PR purposes. I tracked it down and purchased it in August 1996. By then it had 119 kms on it.

Although it was then a year old. it had never been registered and I paid the full new car price. I drove it extensively for 4 years. chiefly long distance trips on country roads. toting up about 200. 00 kms in the time. In 2000 I put it into storage. From time to time since then. I have used it for holiday drives along the east coast. It is still as tight as a drum and runs beautifully.

For the first 4 years or so. maintenance was performed by VW garages and the documentation is available. Since then I have carried out routine maintenance myself twice a year including the occasional run.

The car is original. as purchased in 1996. with the exception of a suspension upgrade to Bilstein struts with Eibach springs. These were fitted because the original suspension tune was inappropriate for rural roads in NSW. A Remus exhaust system is fitted.

Such imperfections as there may be. are the result of use (stone chips) and age (mild wear. fading and creasing of leather in the front).

The rear tyres are new. The front ones should be replaced if the car is to be used. because they are about ten years old and have become hard and noisy.
 
 The bad: The cruise control is not functioning. Since the electronic controller makes the correct audible clicking noise. the defect is probably due to a vacuum leak. Fog lights do not come on - believed due to a faulty relay.

Over the years. very few repairs have been necessary. They include replacement of cooling hoses and the plastic thermostat manifold. fuel pump. fan belt and tensioner. driver's door lock. wheel bearings. cv joints. heater core. speedo cluster. Since new I think the brake pads have only been changed twice. the rotors once. The CV joints were changed shortly before the car went into storage.

When it was shown in the early 90s the VR6 was a surprise package that changed ideas about small hatchbacks. The "weird" engine is a gem for silky smoothness and free revving grunt. With the Bilstein Eibach suspension kit installed. the car handles with remarkable nimbleness. Brakes are powerful.

The car is for sale because I am no longer young enough to properly enjoy it. or rich enough to do all the other things I still want to do. Along with a number of other valuable toys. I am offering it up to fund some changes I wish to make in my life. This is defnitely not a firesale.

The starting price for the auction is low. however because of the car's history and condition I am looking for a collector. Please do not ask the reserve. it is fair for the car. If you are looking for a scrappie. this one isn't for you. Simply make the best offer you can. Pre-auction inspection by appointment is invited. although tyre kickers and insincere buyers will not be welcome.

Payment: Non refundable $500 must be paid within 48 hours of auction completing. The balance is to be paid by bank transfer to my account within 7 days. Account details will be provided to the successful buyer after the auction. The vehicle will not be released before funds are cleared.
