Originally supplied to Ceylon. this car returned to the UK when just a couple of years old. being registered in London in 1937. Now a very nicely constructed reproduction of the ‘cut-away door'. sought after Vanden Plas tourer. built in the 1990 s to a high standard. and very nicely finished in British Racing Green. with light Tan leather interior. Around the same time. the engine was re-furbished. with new pistons. etc. and is still in fine running order. driving very nicely. and used in recent years for various European trips. Complete with full wet weather gear. including side screens and full tonneau cover. a very handsome and desirable car. Mo T tested until September 2013. ready to go. Chassis No. B 143 CW.
Reg No. DXM 228.
£125. 00. Snippets: Ceylon. Silk Scarves. Tortoises & Music. B 143 CW was shipped to Ceylon on the SS Burdwan & delivered to John Lawson at Messrs Brown & Co in Colombo. The firm was founded in 1872 by James Brown as a bicycle repair business and by the end of WWII this small firm had not only expanded into the manufacture. repair & import of agricultural machinery but had bought out the Hatton Bank Ltd as well as the Hatton Transport & Agency Co Ltd.
The firm has gone from strength to strength and today incorporates marine engineering & all aspect of travel.
The SS Burdwan was used in WWII as a freight transporter and was sunk in 1942.
By 1938 B 143 CW had returned to the UK and was with Norman Roy Fox-Edwards a respected Barrister who in 1949 was asked by King George VI to partake in The Royal Commission on Capital Punishment alongside Sir E A Gowers. Florence Hancock. Elizabeth Cameron & Leon Radzinowicz.
During WWI Mr. Fox-Edwards had served with the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry & in WWII was a pilot officer.
The next owner was S G Cansdale whose noteworthy family members included Pervical Frank Cansdale – a director of the Isle of Wight Airways Ltd & Aero Repairs Ltd & George S Cansdale – naturalist. author. zookeeper & TV presenter after whom the Blue Peter tortoise was named!! A few months later the chassis cards show that B 143 CW was with Alan M Allan who had taken over the management of the world famous Jacqmar silk fabric company 1938 after the death of the founder J. Lyons.
Jacqmar was founded in 1932 by the husband & wife team of Joseph “Jack” & Mary Lyons. hence the name Jacqmar.
They supplied high quality fabrics. in particular silk. to the Haute Couture Fashion houses of Europe but it was not until the late 1930 s when the production of the Jacqmar Silk Scarf started. designers included Arnold Lever & Richard Allan (son of Alan Allan).
A few more years & the car was with Louis Kentner. the Hungarian classical pianist- his wife Griselda was the sister of Diana Menuhin who was married to Yehudi Menuhin.
