The Lotus Seven was launched in 1957 after the Lotus Eleven was
in limited production. The Seven name was left over from a model
that was abandoned by Lotus and would have been a Riley-engined. br/>single-seater that Lotus intended to enter into Formula Two in
1952. However. the car was completed around Chapman's chassis as a
sports car by its backers and christened the Clairmonte Special.
The Lotus Seven S 2 followed in 1960 and was supplemented by the
Lotus Super Seven S 2 from 1961. The Super Seven initially used the
larger Cosworth modified 1. 40 cc Ford Classic engine and later
examples were fitted with 1. 98 cc or 1. 99 cc engines. The Seven S 3
was released in 1968 and in 1970. Lotus radically changed the shape
of the car to create the slightly more conventional sized Series 4
(S 4). with a squarer fibreglass shell replacing most of the
aluminium bodywork. It also offered some 'luxuries' as standard. br/>such as an internal heater matrix.
A stunning three-owner from new. this Lotus 7 has been the
subject of a meticulous restoration over an 18 month period by a
respected lotus expert. The tubular steel space frame chassis was
chemically dipped and any suspect tubes replaced before being
etched primed and painted in gloss black. The fiberglass body shell
was hand sanded down to the gel coat and repainted in the original
specification of tangerine orange. The Lotus twin-cam engine was
rebuilt with new rings. bearings. valves. oil pump with the clutch
and gearbox overhauled.
A new wiring loom was installed. br/>interior re-trimmed and refurbished period/optional Dunlop D 1
wheels fitted running Yokohama A 539 tyres. This 1971 Lotus 7 is
supplied with a V 5 C registration document. an Mo T test certificate
which expires in November 2016. a picture album of the restoration
and a small history file. A genuine Lotus 7 that sounds incredible
and drives superbly with looks to match.
