Baja Bugs originated in Southern California in the late 1960s as
an inexpensive answer to the successful Volkswagen-based dune
buggies of the mid-1960s. The first fibreglass Baja kit (bug-eye
kit) was not introduced until 1969. In the early days before
fibreglass body panels became available. enthusiast and racers
simply made their own modification to both the body and mechanics
of a stock VW to develop a machine suited to harsh. off-road
environments. The metal bumpers and front and rear aprons of the
car would be partially cut away to allow more for ground clearance
and suspension travel whilst also leaving the engine totally
exposed to aid cooling. A tubular steel cage front and rear bumper
is fitted to the body and floor pan for protection of engine and
occupants.

Manufactured in 1977. this is a genuine Beetle Baja and is
thought to have only had two owners from new. The original owner
purchased the car in the U. S. for his daughter as an
18th birthday present and on moving to the UK. brought
the car with them. At the time it was believed to be the only
genuine Baja in the UK; it is not known how many are here today
although the numbers are thought to be very low. The current vendor
has owned the Volkswagen since 1993 and is only selling her due to
lack of suitable storage space. This Beetle Baja is fitted with a
1660cc hi-performance engine. twin Kadron carburettors and is said
to produce some 100bhp. With the exception of both doors. this VW
is largely original including the Californian bubble rear windows. br/>leather and velour seats and pearlescent white coachwork. Genuine
Californian Baja's are rare; this example comes with a great
history folder and is sure to create interest from VW
enthusiasts.
