Current customer rating: (178 votes ) based onThe 300 SE of the late 1960s has been described as “The last of the great six-cylinder. two-door Mercedes. ” The 300 SE represented the German automaker's finest effort to produce the best handcrafted luxury automobile possible. using the best materials and workmanship. and was aimed directly at the world's automotive cognoscenti.
Over six years of production. only 3. 27 300 SE coupes and convertibles emerged from Sindelfingen. and the most exclusive of that series was the 300 SE Cabriolet.
Only 78 RHD in the world of these rare convertibles were made in 1964. with its muscular 3. 0 liter 184 hp engine—lifted from the 300SL “gullwing”—and self-leveling pneumatic suspension with four wheel disc brakes. the silky-smooth four-speed automatic transmission. the best leathers. fabrics. and burled-wood veneers available all combined with a top speed of approximately 120 mph W112 300SE was the Mercedes to have in the 1960s.
It was. at the time. the most expensive Mercedes-Benz one could buy. next to the venerable 600.
First UK registered on 31st December 1964 our car is rumoured to have been supplied new to a diplomat who subsequently used it in South America. Australia and North America.
Low ownership with 2 former keepers
Somewhat down at heel when acquired by Mercedes-Benz specialist Walter Nieuwkoop during 2004. the 300SE Cabriolet's subsequent restoration was chronicled in various issues of the UK Mercedes-Benz Club's Gazette magazine.
As well as a bodywork rejuvenation and respray the 300SE has received attention to its fuel system. air suspension. cylinder head. hood and brightwork etc. Mr Nieuwkoop was awarded the '40th Anniversary Trophy' at the UK Mercedes-Benz Club's 2008 Christmas Dinner for the work he had put into the car.
Further improved since entering the most recent ownership. the past four years have seen the 300SE benefit from a rejuvenated air suspension pump and four new air suspension bags (even though only one was leaking) plus the associated pipework.
Additionally treated to a stainless steel exhaust and reconditioned automatic transmission not to mention the refurbishment of its Cream leather upholstery. the Mercedes-Benz has not long been serviced and MOT tested.
Increasingly collectible. good examples of the 300SE Cabriolet are rightly sought after. With the later and larger 280SE 3. 5V8 cars now reaching 250k the 300SE option offers real value for money.
Not to be missed and a water tight investment.
